I saw this done somewhere else with mineral oil. Mineral oil is crystal clear and will not eventually go rancid like vegetable oil. Those guys also had the psu in the fluid and left the cpu and video card fans in place (they spun slow but operated fine).

My first job was in office equipment. When I first started there were still some old timers around repairing typewriters. They had a big box of some kind of clear fluid they would immerse the typewriters in while they were plugged in and then operate all the keys with a stick.

This was nothing short of magic to me at the time and I never forgot it.

I would love to give the mineral oil PC thing a try but the girlfriend would never agree to having an 8 gallon box of oil in the living room. Sigh....I need a garage.

Now that's something I would put under the TV set. Does anybody know if there are any fish out there that can live in Mineral oil (and can stand rotating fans )?

You don't even need the fans with that one. They just liked the looks of them spinning.

I thought the veg oil version was kind of a nice idea as an experiment but a bit ugly and wouldn't want to do it myself.

Now I've seen the aquarium version with mineral oil, I definately gotta have one.

happening sometime in the near future, somewhere in the netherlands, local pet store:
- "hmmm, sorry, do you have some exotic fish?"
- "sure, what are you seeking?"
- "well, they'll need to stand temps near 40°"
- "are you american? that would be near freezing temp, sorry, we don't have arctic fishes"
- "no, no, 40°C"
- (gapeing) "warm water aquariums are around 24°C, so sorry, i've never heard on any exotic fish surviving such temps"
- "<muttured on> damned, still gotta cool it! <muttured off> any fish living in mineral oil? perhaps some fish living inside an oil well? they would need to be fast, must avoid getting cought in the fans..."
...cut... driving away frustrated... next stop at the local toy store, searching for some good looking dummy fishes imported from china...

I was thinking of visiting a pet store tomorrow...... guess it's gonna be a toy store then.... darn. In search of toy fish without "made in china" printed on them, I hate it when they do that.
Oh, next problem to solve, they must be able to float IN the oil not ON TOP of it
