Update Notifier?

Can we get an update notifier someday. I gotta say that was the single most useful thing with mythtv.. linux synaptic package manager. If we could get a plugin or something that would say whether there are updates for our plugins, patches for the main program or updates for the main program etc. It drives me nuts having to keep watching the forums for new patches.

The weather and video archive plug-ins will notify you when a newer version is posted on the wiki site.

Maybe a unified way for all plugins to update themselves/ main app to update itself..

I envision
System->Check for updates
There are 2 Plugin updates
There are 1 Application updates
__________ ___________
| Download | | Install |


Basically the process would be..
Download the update
Backup necessary files.
Shutdown the server.
Install update
Restart the server.

Anyway just some thougts. I would do it myself but I believe this should be in the GBPVR framework rather than a plug in personally.

Could sub have a single thread in 'announcements' where each new release gets a mention - maybe patches, maybe plugin updates. Then if someone subscribes to that thread they get an email notification of additions???

You could subscribe to the GBPVR announcements forum, and to the sticky in the support forum, + to any important (for you) plugin forums.

I didn't realise that you could subscribe to a complete forum and so see new threads. I've just done it - before I was using RSS data.
