Not to sound like too much of an idiot, but WTF is EVR? I selected it and it (the video) works, but I don't really notice anything. Not that that's a bad thing, btw! I can't be the only one who doesn't know what it is and what it does.

Does EVR take the place of a video decoder? Does it affect the decoder?

EVR is a video renderer. It is responsible for displaying each video frame (which was decoded by the video decoder) on the screen at the right time. Other video renderer options are VMR9, VMR7 and Overlay. Each use a slightly different way of showing frames on the screen.

EVR is the default video renderer in Vista. It is also available in XP (with .net 3.0 installed), but is unable to use hardware acceleration features of your videocard in XP.

EVR is supposed to have better color than VMR9, and also present video at a more regular rate - giving smoother playback.

Having mentioned that, I do notice that the video is smoother. I guess it works, then! Thanks for the additons sub! Also, I guess noticing no change for a brand new option isn't bad at all. I remember when I first setup GBPVR selecting the renderer was a real nail-biter. Now, I didn't even notice that I had selected something different, at first!

Does the EVR renderer future-proof GBPVR for cablecard and other locked down media services? I saw you mention something about it in an old thread.

Cablecard is too far off to really know at this stage.

Behind the scenes though, EVR uses Microsoft's media foundation stuff, which includes the capabilities for doing secure digital path to the monitor. This is something Microsoft would probably require for CableCard support.

Does it also have any effect when using a MVP?

Does EVR work with FSE or is used instead off FSE?

I believe it's instead of. As FSE as a VMR/DirectX thing.
