I've been pretty unlucky with my setups recently and I think it's because I've been over heating my system. I used to hide the PC in a cabinet with little ventilation and the CPU temps would go up to 45 deg C idle and 55+ under load.

Now I've got an NSK2480 on a shelf with the front open and I'm operating at about 37 deg C going up to 45 deg C under load.

What are your temperatures?

All my other temperature readings - HDD, PSU, MOBO aare < 40 degC now...before they used to be all above 40 deg C. I'm using speedfan to control the fan speeds and hence noise.

EDIT: geez, I do know how to spell...it should be "temperature" anyone know how to fix the title?

EDIT2: it seems i can't count either...there should have been a 45-50 deg C so make that >50 deg C to be > 45 deg C...:o

Your cpu is known as being quite a hot one so your temps sound fine to me.

My speedfan "desired" temp is 53 which keeps the fan speed low. Mind I have a decent 92mm fan mounted on a Thermaltake SI-120 heatsink, sitting on an old AMD Athlon XP mobile cpu set at 2Ghz. I may set it higher (say 2.2) for very slightly better transcoding speeds (which on these chips is rubbish) but for recording and playback, 2Ghz is just fine. Thermal meltdown for this chip is at about 90C.

Only problem with doing this poll is that motherboards frequently report different temps so even if someone else has exactly the same cpu as you, if they have a different mobo it will show a different temp.

One useful test is to take the case lid off when when running the system under load. If the temps drop, this means you could benefit from better case cooling. But with a HTPC system you are really chasing silence, not low temps.

Keeping HD temps under control is definitely a good idea tho.

yea, those HD are just asking for it at that temp..
i suggest a cheap hd cooler that bolts right on bottom if you can fit one..[<10$]
they will keep hd at room temp and make them last forever almost..
10x better than other non-forced air solutions..[except water obv.]
the fans near hd on most cases don't do squat usually..

plus it'll keep your entire case cooler to boot..

I assume this means at idle / semi - load.

I know the PC goes up a bit when comskipping etc - but before I got my Arctic Freezer 7 I was hitting 55 / 60 C at load - which kept me concerned, although it heated the apartment as a bonus! Aftyer installing, it idles about 32, going up to about 38


my MB blew up, so had to replace, which meant removing my 4 week old thermal paste (MX-1, pre applied)

I didn't think that stuff made too much of a difference, but I used some generic stuff (silver, not silicone grease) and the idle temp went up to 36, topping at about 45.
I guess the extra money for the mx1 or AS5 is a good investment. (i'll know for next time)

(and I always use the word temp cause I can't spell it properly - or consistently!)

I've noticed my idle temp is running way too high, about 50C idle and about 55 under load. It's a slightly overclocked AMD 2500+ and I know I ought to pull the machine apart and see what the trouble is, but I'm too lazy. It runs fine anyway.

At somepoint I'll either get around to it, or it'll blow and I'll upgrade it like I've been wanting too all along.

I'm currently running at about 50degC mostly idle. My processor is a P4 2.4GHz Prescott which is known for running hot.

I replaced the standard heatsink with a Zalman Super Flower a long time back but the fins on the Super Flower get bunged up with dust. Time to clean them out I think. I'd expect 35-40degC once I've done that.

Whenever mine does that, I know it's time to open it up and blow out the dust

Mine runs ~51C under load. But then again, Pentium D's are known to run hot.
