I don't suppose there is a magic registry switch or something to turn on hardware acceleration.

No. If you're not doing high def though, most machines will cope just fine without hardware acceleration.

if one plans on doing HD in the near future what would be best for an XP machine? FSE?

BTW, great job sub.
P4-1.6Ghz, 512MB RAM, 200GB dedicated PVR drive, 80GB OS and Archive drive, nVidia FX5200 and 2 x Hauppauge PVR-150.

FWIW, I can watch HD just fine with EVR in WinXP using my office computer:
Opteron 185 (@2.7Ghz)
Radeon X1900XT
using the ATI MPEG decoder

The video quality looks fantastic. But it wasn't bad with VMR9 either.

I doubt my PVR (in sig) will have the horsepower to run it tho.
MY PVR:
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium
Hardware: Silverstone LC13-E, Athlon II 250, Asrock 785GMH, 2GB Corsair RAM, 250GB WD HDD, 1TB WD Black, Hauppauge PVR-150 MCE tuner (s-video to Dish STB), HDHomeRun (ATSC x2), MCE2004 for Rx, USB-UIRT for Tx, Sony VL600 Remote, 36" Sony Wega HD CRT on DVI to embedded ATI HD4200.
TV Service: Dish Network and Antenna Pics 'n Details
