I'll try and do a REALLY simple take on this. Eventghost (Free), HIP (Free) and Girder (Commercial) are all programs which will allow your computer to send out signals automatically, to control various devices around your house (or work), and to receive signals to change settings in the computer, which in turn changes settings on these devices. In simple terms, your PC "pretends" to be the person pushing the remote button ...

Example 1.

Let's say your house has air-conditioners with remote controls that are set (Temp, on/off) by a Remote Control (assume these are Infrared).

With an IR transmitter (e.g. a USB-UIRT, which is ALSO a receiver) you can automatically control the aircons on a set schedule. You'd do this by:

1. Pointing the aircons remotes at the USB-UIRT (acting as a reciever in this case) and getting it to "learn" the codes issued by the remote, for on/off hotter colder. You do this FROM the software.
   
2. Then you set up your software to perform certain events on a scheduled basis, to control the aircons. To do this, you need a USB-UIRT (or extenders plugged into it) to send (Transmit) the learned codes BACK to the aircon. i.e. the aircon THINKS YOU are pointing the remote at it, buty it's actually the PC and the USB-UIRT. You are at work/on holiday etc.

Example 2

This is the application I have for the MVP. When you set up GBPVR for use with a remote, it ONLY learns codes for 0-9 and OK, to change channels. That's it. It would be a LOT of work for sub to add OTHER learning facilities, AND troubleshoot them.

This is where e.g. HIP or EventGhost (EG) step in. Now, I have two cable boxes, and APART from changing channels, they also have a button for changing audio between A,B, A/B. Where I live we have NICAM, i.e. DUAL audio on SOME programs, which can play a movie in English (my language) or Cantonese, like on an airplane. Now quite often A=English, B=Cantonese, but SOMETIMES it's the opposite.

Because I can't change that setting with my MVP remote (remember 0-9, OK ONLY), sitting on my sofa (you probably think what a fat lazy slob, but I'm a svelte 76kg :-) ), I have to run upstairs to the cable box, grab the Cable Box remote, point it at the cable box, change the language setting and go back down to my sofa.

So Martin, brilliant that he is, put a setting in the dongle for the IR signal "Go Green" and "Go Red", (i.e. a two-button sequence on the MVP remote) which EG intercepts (via the PC, because the MVP always talks to the PC via GBPVR, via the Network), and sends an IR signal to my Cable box using the USB-UIRT.

Remember now from the example above that I have got EG to LEARN the code sent by the MVP, from my Cable Box remote, via the USB-UIRT.

Isn't this incredible? Even INSIDE GBPVR it's great. OUTSIDE, the possibilities are boundless. You can control your HOUSE from your PC...
