Lockup on VMR9

just a shot in the dark, but did you reinstall windows when switching motherboards?
hadn't noticed till your last post that you switched motherboards and had assumed this was a fresh build.

Yeah I did. I started with a fresh drive and installed windows XP home on it.

if this is a fresh install, with the latest chipset/vga drivers available installed, and you have fully updated windows.. i can't really see this as a software issue.
does vmr9 work in any other media player?
and just out of curiousity what psu are you using for this pc? model/watts/amps?

It is a fresh install latest drivers etc. When I use wmp it works fine, but I think that is using overlay.
Power Supply: Is an antec 450W SmartPower 2.0 ATX12V

I'm going to see if I can find a different video card to put in this as a test.

Just put together an older system (2600+ AMD Athlon XP, VIA KT400 chipset) for PVRX2 and whenever I play files using vmr9 custom, it locks up and I have to reboot the system. If I play them using overlay, it all works fine.
I'm guessing it's the video drivers, but was throwing it out here to see if anyone has had a problem like this.

I used to have a similar motherboard & Athlon XP system with an ATI 9600 and a Creative 5.1 Live. I also had these lockups almost exactly as you described. They appeared to be due to the bus latency settings and the fact that both the Creative card and the ATI card were sometimes getting into an "inifinite loop" fault on the common PCI bus. I used to use a utility that could allow latencies to be adjusted under Windows (EnTech Powerstrip) and that could alleviate the problem. However, in the end I upgraded and switched to nVidia graphics and a motherboard based Realtek AC'97 system.

Interestingly, I recently migrated an Audigy 2 card from another PC to one using two nVidia graphics cards and started encountering random lock-up / crash problems - solution: ditch the Audigy and return to the on-board AC'97.

Lesson learned: PCI busses have limitations and two many high-powered (high activity) cards that try to hog the bus will cause problems.

I tried a second 9600 pro and it had the same trouble. I turned off the motherboard audio and it hasn't locked up yet after 30 minutes with AGP set to 8x.
I'll see if it makes it for a two hour program.

EDIT: Well, what do you know, it's working. Put in a SB live and it's all working smoothly.
