F-ing Router!!

My router at home decided it didn't want to play nice anymore. It is a decent Linksys one, model WRT54G.

I can only connect one pc at home until I get a replacement or fix the problem with this one. It no longer will pick up a IP address from my cable modem.

Yeah, I upgraded the firmware, various power cycling. Going to hit there website for more ideas.

Chased the gremlins away for now (by doing nothing!). All week it has been really acting up on me.

The 54G is a great router for hacking. Have you looked into DD_WRT or Tomato? Let's you do a whole crap load of stuff you never thought you'd ever need. The only version it won't run on is 7 if I remember right.

I'll put my vote in for HyperWRT for the wireless G. I like that I'm able to increase the power which helped much with using my laptop upstairs.

I had a similar problem months ago and thought it was my router. Turns out my modem was starting to crap out. Never had a modem last me more than 3 years.

Hmm, I'm gonna have to look into all these hacks. I have a WRT54G sitting in the basement as a paper weight because the wireless was so intermittant. I'm back to using my ancient BEFW11S4.

Seems like HyperWRT is not being updated. I just did find a more recent (beta) firmware for HyperWRT https://sourceforge.net/projects/hyperwrt/ but have just been reading up on Tomato and it looks pretty nice. I'm just happy with what I'm using at the moment.

I'm using DD-WRT as a repeater, but I'd recommend using Tomato to start. It's much easier to get up and working. Depending on your router version DD-WRT can be a bit confusing figuring out what file versions to use and you have to flash twice in a lot of cases. I don't know why these companies just can't build that stuff in........oh wait, it would freak most people out to see all the things you can do. The one feature I saw was, you can set it up and have people pay you (via PayPal) to use your bandwidth. I'm sure your ISP would just love that! (not)

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll take a look. It looks like the latest firmware did improve things with the PS3.

After doing some reading, it looks like there was an issue with the PS3 after the v.1.8 firmware update allowed it to work with DNLA devices.

It turns out that my NAS drive would then assign network IP addresses (I have it set up to do so for when I take it and my laptop places) and would keep assigning them every time I would reboot the router. By fluke I figured that out by unplugging cat-5 cables out of the router.

I guess it was a perfect storm of events, PS3 kill connection, NAS drive takes over, rebooting modem and router...whatever.

Crossing fingers now. Maybe the Router firmware upgrade will solve the gremlins. It all started the same week I had a new PS3 game that wanted to download patches.
