I see that Intel have an g45 chipset with x4500 dx 10.0 graphics chipset being launched in q2, presumably to mobo manufacturers. So we might see some even better (!) boards towards the end of the year.

How does a E2140 compare in processing power to a AMD Dual 4200+?

I'm not up on Intel CPU's so not sure what compares to my present setup.

I would say that the 4200 is faster than the 2140 at stock speeds.

The great thing about the core2 duo cpus is that they overclock like hell. My 2160 is running at 3.2Ghz in my main rig but you probably wouldn't want to do that in a htpc system.

if you want to run at stock speeds, the AMD cpus are good contenders.

Yah, looking at building a low power quiet box, so overclocking is out of the question.

I've used an E4300 on a G965 GMA 3000 board for a year and I have been been pleased with the value and extreme stability and I am pretty aggressive with how I use it. It's not a gaming machine (Vista SAT gaming video score of 4) but fine for my needs.

here's the dxva stats for the graphics chipset..
it does vc1 and wmv and 264!
strange colorspace but i think that's only used internally, the codecs send out to the guid one[long numbered one], and it sends it on to the hardware chip...
so even if can't do the hw colorspace, as long as it can use one of them it'll get to the hw decoder..[ex. yuy2 or nv12]

i wish more people would list thier graphics card in the sigs...they are noticably rare..[me included! lol]
but i've changed so often it was kinda hard to keep up..

go figure the intel chipsets would outshine the rest...lol
can't wait for the new mini-itx with even better graphics come out..i would bet money that's the ultimate tiny client machine...and cheap too..

btw,i have a celeron core2 single [i think 230?] and it seems to run without effort as well as this one..[e2140] and yep, they overclock like crazy, but i haven't seen any need..plus the added heat...this is heatless coming out the back pretty much...
i even left the cpu fan off and it had no problems..lol [only went to 50deg.well within limits] and came with a heatsink that's about a half in. tall..[plus the fan it's about 2 in. tall]

the amd's are nice but not quite as cool for the horsepower in the lower end models..

oh and did i mention these can do hdmi with an ADD2 adapter and a hdmi?
ADD2 is just a connection to the internal graphics card, enabling other video output options...the only ones i've seen are dvi or dualdvi, but those can be adapted to hdmi with a dongle like ati cards.....i haven't seen any direct hdmi add2 adapters but they should exist somewhere..

and i use ffdshow, set colorspace to nv12 only and you'll get accell...then you have extra cpu to use for post processing..

For those of you who are saddled with only built-in graphics,[like laptop users]
if you have at least an Intel GMA 950 you can get full HD playback, liquid smooth..

Assuming you've got the graphics drivers setup, just use evr renderer, and ATI Avivo codecs...[atidvcr.dll] and you'll get perfect deinterlacing up to 1080i for sure.

really surprised me how nice it was for this lowly graphics chip..tho i have an idea the 256 bit core is why it works so well...
