Using the 'warped resize' option in Resize so that my 4:3 aspect ratio programming looks as nice as it can on my plasma. Wouldn't give it up for anything! Hardware deinterlacing works great too (just check the box to pass the interlace flags to the renderer)

However after reading your post I looked at the options under deinterlacing and, indeed, one of the options is 'Bypass'.
So the question is, what difference is there between using bypass, or just not using deinterlacing at all in ffdshow?

You don't put a check next to Deinterlacing.. (you don't want to use any deinterlacing filter).

You want to go to the Output tab and put a check to "set interlace flag". If you're using an older version of ffdshow, it might say something like "HW interlacing". Look at the picture:

OK thanks. Still not sure about that setting though - it only allows you to set the deinterlace flag as bob or weave. In Purevideo or Avivo you can set smart or automatic to determine deintelacing method, and they have more advanced choices like motion adaptive. I guess the proof is in the pudding so I will try ffdshow for mpeg2 and see how it compares.

The setting names are lazily done; if you choose Bob it will indeed kick in pixel-adaptive deinterlacing at the renderer. And, if you've got Inverse Telecine enabled in your graphic card's control panel settings, that will work as well. So I can set up multiple profiles using ffdshow and do all the filtering I want.. and still have hardware deinterlacing and a more than decent CPU load because of it. I couldn't be happier.

Just built a new system based on a 780g mobo chipset, and thought I should post the settings I am using on it:

Operating System -Windows XP Pro SP 3
Video card used - HD3200 (onboard)
Analogue or digital tuner? - Nova-T PCI and Nova-T stick (digital)
Video renderer - VMR9 FSE. Back to FSE! I only used EVR in XP as I had been getting tearing when playing H264 files. On the new system this is reversed - I get tearing using EVR (probably because there is no HWA in EVR on XP)
Video decoder - ATI MPEG decoder
DVD decoder - System default (ATI Avivo)
Audio decoder - ffdshow for everything
Multiplexor -ATI
H264 playback - CoreAVC with deinterlacing set to none (hardware)
DivX / XviD decoder - ffdshow
Using PVRX2 on CRT or LCD? LCD
Display connection - HDMI
Monitor resolution - 1360*768

Quite happy with the results using just the ATI drivers / encoders and ffdshow. Everything works (touch wood) and it's nice to have the video inset window back using VMR.

i can hardly tell the difference from livetv and normal tv! playback is excellent on tv, recordings and media inc. MKV

whereas on the same setup, live tv on VMC is poor

Not sure what the multiplexor is (for digital?), I've never set anything on purpose for this.

GB-PVR is a very solid program that gets heavy daily use. The only real problem I've ever had is that Live TV timeshift mode gives me 5 seconds of stutter between channel changes.
