MVP Expectations

I've had my GB-PVR set-up now for about two weeks and am loving it.

I need some information about the MVP. What should I expect when viewing TV on the MVP? When I change the channel on my MVP, it takes a wife-maddening 3 to 5 seconds to move to the next channel. On the PC, it takes milliseconds. Is this normal?

I have applied the registry updates to the Computer's NIC card (from Hauppauge) and have played with GB-PVR's config settings, but haven't been able to make the response time quicker. The CPU utilization is minimal when doing almost anything on the MVP. Also have downloaded the latest beta software from Hauppauge for the MVP.

Also, whenever the MVP loses power (power outage), I have to shut down GB-PVR and restart the original MVP processes to get the MVP to connect and boot. After it boots the first time, I can shut down the Hauppauge software and restart the GB-PVR software and it works. Is this normal?

MVP D1 revision.

In general, the MVP is always going to be a bit slower than what you'll see on the PC. This is just the nature of how they work. Commands from the remote control have to be sent to the PC, processed, the results compressed & then sent back to the MVP for a screen refresh.
I only notice a delay while navigating the GB-PVR menus, and while skipping fwd & back through a recording (the actual playback is flawless). As for Live TV, I don't often use the MVPs for that (especially for flipping through channels) but the fews times I have watched Live TV through the MVP it has performed very well.

As for the issues you are seeing after a power loss, it sounds like you have the Hauppauge MVP software set to auto load? Set the Hauppauge MVP service to Manual instead of Auto. Or if you will never be using the Hauppauge interface, just uninstall it. None of the Hauppauge software needs to be installed for the MVP to work with GB-PVR.

Yes, that would be about what I expect (maybe 2 to 4 seconds). A lot of things happen when you change channels. Also, the MVP was never designed by Hauppauge for viewing live tv. It tries to buffer a fair amount of video data before it'll start playback. This isnt a problem when you're playing a video file that has been pre-recorded (as the device was designed for), but doesnt work so well when you've just started the recording.

You could try turning on the 'minimal OSD' option which may make things a little more responsive.

Also, I can get the onscreen menu to come up during a show (i.e. the show is playing and at the bottom I see a mini-tv guide), but cannot ever get it to go away (again on the MVP, and it is very slow). Is there a button on the remote for this?

Pressing the back buttonb should hide the mini-tv guide.

I had to re-read your original post, but I think I understand what's going on now. I'm guessing you don't have a DHCP server running on your network? The Hauppauge MVP software has that built-in, without it running the MVP can't get an IP address. Let me know if I'm on the right track & I'll give you a few options to try out.

I'm hooked up to my main TV with a crossover cable from my coat closet (computer is silent in there). I've given my computer an IP address but haven't set anything else up.

I think you are on the right track. What do I need to do?

I've never done this (never needed to) but I *think* you just need to set up Internet Connection Sharing so that your PC will dish out an IP address.

Quick walkthrough for enabling internet connection sharing:

Assuming you've got XP Pro (probably not all that different for home), open up the Network Connections, right-click on the network interface that the computer is connected to the internet on (or if it's not, then pretty much any other interface that isn't in use except for the one the MVP is on), and click properties.

Under the advanced tab, check 'Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connaction', and make sure the drop down below that has the connection the MVP is on.

Once that all settles out, you should be good to go without the hauppauge software.
