I've got some mp3's that make a harsh pop and click sound in my amp instead of music when played through PVRX2. Other mp3's play fine in PVRX2 and these mp3's play OK through WMP and other mp3 players outside of PVRX2. If it's relevant, the amp is connected via SPDIF and the internal audio uses DTS Connect, but as above, these files play fine with this setup in Windows Media Player.

I've looked in config, but it's unclear if the MPEG settings apply to mp3 audio. Changing them seemed to have no effect.

GB-PVR doesnt do the playback of MP3 files itself, and instead just asks Directshow to play them using whatever the system defaults decoders are. WMP uses some non-directshow stuff, so may different, but other directshow based apps would have the same problem. It'll either be related to the system default mp3 decoders being used, or possibly the audio renderer you've selected.

Thanks. Reading through some other posts, I sort of thought it might be the default Directshow and not GB-PVR, so I tried to play in all 3 of the other players I had installed. It plays just fine in those (WMP, Nero and PowerDVD). After reading your post, I installed another - Media Player Classic, and that one pops and clicks, confirming it's not GB-PVR.

Gspot says the problem files are Mpeg-1 Layer 3 - 160 kbps, 44100 Hz.

I've got Radlight Filter Manager and can change the filter merit, but how do I tell which filter is used for files of this type or how do I tell what filters are used by the working players so I can increase their merit?

I had this same problem as well. I fixed it by changing my audio renderer. I just placed it back onto System Default and that seems to have fixed the problem. maybe try some different audio renderers.

Thanks. I'm not sure if playback of an mp3 file is affected by the settings under "MPEG" in config or under "DVD", or if they are totally unaffected by config. I think sub is saying that mp3's just get handed over to the system and it uses its default Directshow filters, which I interpret as being controlled by filter merit. That would mean there's no point in playing with settings in config. I've confirmed that at least one other player behaves the same way as GB-PVR on these files.

Besides, I have tried multiple settings for decoder and renderer in config. Changing them seemed to have no effect.

I'm reading up on graphedit and Filter Managers, but it's slow going. You'd think you could just ask the system "What filters will be used if I ask you to play this file with that program?" or even just what are the defaults for this file type, but so far I can't find out how.

Problem solved.

Graphedit tells me what filters are used. Radlight Filter Manager changes the merit. Research told me the normal default mp3
decoding, and playing with merits got it all working.

Hi dennit, would you be able to state what filters you ended up using? I was using an alternate filter for a while, but it cut the end off some songs, so have now reverted to my previous (popping) filter.

thanks,

It's all in a state of flux for me, as I like to tinker. What I have now is not what I had just after I fixed it. At that time I adjusted to the Windows default filters. Figuring out how to control what Windows/DirectShow does with the mp3 file after GBPVR hands it off was the important part for me. I haven't yet selected anything that's particularly optimum, but it all plays.

For the record, I installed Graphedit, then dragged the particular problem mp3 file to it to see what was happening. I just did that again, and it shows the MPEG-I stream splitter, followed by ffdshow Audio Decoder, followed by Default DirectSound. Ffdshow was configured by me to specify PVRX2 as one of the supported apps. Hope that helps.
