Which direction now?

When I switched from the MVP to the PCH, this are the things I miss the most:
1. resume
2. comskip
3. timeshifting a live recording (I have lag in audio when I fast forward and no skip forward support).
4. slideshow while playing music

I do have to say that the HD support and improved picture quality for DVDs makes these tradeoffs worth it though. Comskip is great when it works right, but I think it always brought a little instability into my system anyway.l

That might even be something that sub could fix, I'm speculating the actual problem relates to the length of the file changing, since something is causing the PCH to buffer the file after a pause.

Lack of comskip is keeping me from buying a PCH. I still use MVP's and non HD tv's and Directv satellite.

Since I think some of you are not getting a full appreciation for the timeline maintained by GBPVR in comskip processing and why comskip is complex a demo is in order.

Steps

1. Create a blank folder on a share that the PCH can access

For those of you who aren't comfortable with the command prompt I am uploading a 170MB sample of a reasonable approximation of a 5 minute comcleaned set of files http://www.megaupload.com/?d=I07WZAFK you can unzip to this folder and you can move to step 7. Otherwise

2. download mpgtx for Windows here http://mpgtx.sourceforge.net/#Download

3. from the command prompt navigate to the folder you made in step 1

4. Unzip mpgtx into this blank folder

5. Select a short mpeg-ps file you want to test for input for step 5

6. run mpgtx -s 10 \recordings\input.mpg

7. From the PCH native interface navigate to the share that you created in step 1.

8. Hit play (not ok) to start playing all the files in the folder sequentially.

9. If you hit skip and prev you can mimic comskip and judge the delay,

10. If you just let it play in order things seem ok, however

11. Because the timeline is broken you can't use the mono right/left arrows or the time seek anywhere but the first file. FF/RW might work. You also can only move between segment with prev and next.

So yes, this is comskip but I don't think people really want it, even as their number one priority. You have to factor in all the elements it isn't just just saying I want 1 then 2 then 3, it's pretty much all or continue with mono.

Resume is most important to me, and that seems to be possible with both road maps. You seem to know how Syabas is going to implement it so you probably know if it will be acceptable for us GBPVR users. Maybe you could give some more information, since the NMT board is off line?

I'm one of those persons that's gotten used to mono. I just wish it would support background playing, so we could keep the GBPVR interface with music files, exactly the same as the current way of playing music with the mediamvp, with a screen saver that shows the file being played.

I would also like it if the 30 second skip was customizable, 1 minute forward and 30 seconds back is a great feature of GBPVR. And the percentage skip is totaly crazy, but I've said that in previous threads, so sorry for repeating myself.

Not having a real timeline is a very bad idea, I use that a lot. So basicly I think you should go for the Syabas way, certainly when you believe you can influence their road map in a possitive way for GBPVR users. You should also think about the consequences for future emulation hardware, like the PS3. And what direction is mvpmc going?

I think Chris sums it up nicely for me too. I am fairly used to mono and comskip never worked consistently for me so I vote for a good Syabas integration.

Resume, time skip and correct timeline is high prio. And also that the responsiveness is snappy. You mentioned a slight lag in emulation mode for time skip which sounds a little troublesome.

I suppose, but until they improve play of a normal mpeg timeline it won't. Specifically being based in the US, Popcorn Hour might need to consider what happened to ReplayTV and I personally consider having the 30 second skip is progressive in this era.

Note sub and I are considering Sheik Yerbouti's suggestion to enhance the Syabas skip to see if we can make it more GBPVR like.
