Does anyone know what this artifact is called? (most noticeable on the red/white pole). It is only noticeable on horizontal panning.

The channel is BBC HD and h264, video decoder CoreAVC. Video 6600gt.

My thoughts were something to do with interlacing, but my techy knowledge of video is approaching zero.

Once I know what it's called I can research a fix.

cheers

i'm not sure you can really do much about it. looks like 3:2 pulldown judder

happy reading:

Thanks for that, it gave me a start for searching. On slower pans it seemed much worse.

Ended up being the default 'weave' deinterlacing (or none) and changing it to 'bob' seems to have sorted it out.

It looks a bit like the 'tearing' that you can get if you get your interlaced frames out of sequence. If so, it is most evident on things moving horizontally, and not detectable on still or slow moving things.

I agree with wannabepvr Smile looks like interlacing, and it probably is since they broadcast in 1080i right?

Yes, it was interlacing. It looked much wierder on slower moving pans, more like hum bars. These fancy new decoders seem quite twitchy for setup.
