Hi all. I have a weird problem.

I had a setup with a single hauppauge nova-s plus tuner. All was working well so I purchased and installed another one. The first one is working still but the second one will only see vertical polarity channels and not horizontal. I get no signal reading when scanning.

I am running freeview nz and I have the latest version of GBPVR.

The setups are identical except the second one I setup as device 2.

Both cards are plugged in using a splitter from Dick Smith. If one was faulty or not installed correctly then i dont think I would get anything. I am using an old sky dish. And I have tried seeting with and without power on both cards. No difference.

Hope someone can help.

Thanks,

Edward.

are you sure you have selected the correct satellite and not the test one?
also make sure your splitter lets power down both legs (no red line on it)

The polarity of the LNB (at the end of the dish arm) is controlled by the voltage on the cable to the dish. A splitter typically only passes power from one of the splits, so only that one card could control the polarity.

Also remember that a single LNB can only do one polarity at a time, so single LNB couldnt be doing both vertical and horizontal at the same tune.

Thanks for the info and the fast replies. A closer look at the splitter shows it only gets power from one side as you stated. the strange thing is I set the power to off on both cards and I still get signal. I think I will need to get out a voltmeter and find out whats happening. I can't get to it yet as my daughter is watching bumble and that cannot be interupted for fear of serious repercussions.

I take it the power from 1 card would give it horizontal and if i managed to get 2 lots it would make it vertical.

Hopefully I can have a better look tonight at the voltage issues.

The "powered" check box in the capture source settings doesnt do anything.

The horizontal/vertical polarity is determined by whether its receiving 13V or 18V.

As I mentioned though, one LNB can only be one polarity at a time, so you're not going to be able to have one card receiving horizontal while the other receives vertical, all from the same LNB.

i found that if the splitter had to be one that let the power pass on both otherwise when the tuner that let the power pass the other would stop recording

Having both pass the power could give you unpredictable results if one is trying to do vertical and the other horizontal.

Thanks for the help. I have tried switching the cables over and the problem changes to the other card. I think the problem is power and splitters.

I'm still getting nowhere so tomorrow I will obtain some more cabling and run the signal into a set top box to let it deal with the power and then out to the splitter and see if that sorts the issues out.

And that is by design. Perhaps reading here and here will help you understand what's happening.

I understand that what you are trying to achieve is to record or watch two channels independently of each other. With a splitter and a single LNB you will only be able to watch or record channels from the same polarity (H or V). The polarity of the LNB will be determined by the device that is connected to the DC (power) passthrough leg on your splitter, as it will send 13/18V to the LNB.
What you need is a dual output LNB and a separate cable to your #2 tuner card.
