Everything I want to watch is in Horizontal. The problem is when I try to tune in the second card it tells me there is nothing on horizontal and it only finds the one channel on vertical. Which is a test pattern. I havent looked at the channel to verify a picture but it comes up and shows the channel which is called test.

Your problem is that the splitter doesn't pass the 18V generated on your second card when tuning horizontal channels, which is intentional to protect the other device. Theoretically, you have the following non-supported option: You could try finding yourself a splitter with DC passthrough on both legs (don't know if they are available, though). I have no idea what 18V being passed backwards into the other tuner card will do to it, though. So be warned, you might damage your tuner cards.

Again, my suggestion is a dual lnb and a second cable.

OK. After a lot of playing around I have found a few things. As stated by other members my splitter only allows voltage to travel up one leg. Plugging this into the 1st card results in the other card not working. For some reason when the card is not running live tv it is only running at around 12 - 13volts. So when the other card tries to run there is not enough voltage to run Horizontal polarity. I was able to verify this by plugging in my set top box on the splitters other leg. It gave no signal until live tv was running on the card. I will see what happens tomorrow when I prchase another lead and use the stb's loop through to run the 2 cards. Thus using the power from the STB instead of from the cards.

If either tuner is not set to receive a signal, it will idle at 12v so default to V signal.
It is only if a tuner is tuning to a H channel that it will send the higher voltage to switch the LNB. You need a splitter or gizmo that would allow either leg to let the higher volatge through.
I guess NZ is one of the few places that use a single polarity where a splitter might be of any use at all. I'd agree with others - dual or quad LNB and a new run of coax. One of these days they may wake up another transponder on your satellite with vertical polarisation.

Yeah, both of the above posts are correct. In your setup you probably need to have the set top box powering the LNB, since its the only thing likely to be running the whole time and supplying the required voltage to keep it horizontal.

i have a nova-s and hvr 4000 both with power turned on running through a none directional splitter and i dont have any issues
cheaper than 2 lnbs
jaycar have them if there is one near where you are
im sure the cards have protection on the output but i guess if they dont then im just lucky Smile

Supplying sufficient power to the LNB when not in use seems to be a characteristic of the Nova S cards. I used to have a AVerMedia DVB-S Pro and it powered the LNB all the time, whether in use or not.

Thanks for all your help.
