Once again, I had to bug out of my house and run from a hurricane. I did pretty well in Katrina (lost my business office) but came back. So far, this time I seem to have lucked out again. They won't let us go back home for a few days. Guess I'll just have to make a mini vacation out of things in Vicksburg, MS.

I hate it that you had to leave again. We are supposed to go to Disney World this Saturday. Now we have Hanna coming to the Carolinas on the Friday and Ike pointed at Florida or ???

I feel your pain, but as an island boy who moved to Kentucky, trust me when I say you would prefer them over tornadoes. It at least give you time to get out of the way (really the only good thing about a hurricane though). After having a tornado rip through my back yard and literally jump over my garage, I'll take the hurricane any day. I was actually standing in my garage and barely had time to get to the house and to the basement. And the only reason I ran for it was because of my experiences in hurricanes and I knew that was no wind shear that I was hearing.

Yeah, tornadoes don't give you much warning if any. I talked to some in the Pensacola area where there were embedded tornadoes in the rain but those are not as strong.
Flooding is another silent killer. All the rain Faye and Gustav put down floods hundreds of small streams and many aren't aware that days and weeks later, they fill up and over bank.
The cost of living will again be very high for months on end. With power out, the fridge is a goner. We don't keep a full freezer this time of year but the food we will throw out will be costly. But, we're alive and that's all that matters.
More hurricanes left before this season is over. It's a bitch of a season, that's for sure.

Yup. You know they say that everyone goes through at least one natural disaster in their lifetime. After being through a hurricane, a tornado, a flood and a fire, I either have to be the unluckiest or the safest person on the planet. Of course, I could be the luckiest person having survived them all, now that I think about it.

I lived 3 miles from ground zero during the Northridge, CA earthquake. Had about 50 grand of damage but had insurance. It came at 4:31 AM and was a real bad way to wake up. It was the only time in my life that I thought that I actually might die. You know it is going to be a bad day when the President tours your street....

Good luck to all on the coast this time of year.

I wouldn't consider that spam (which is unsolicited). I would consider that link a community service. Big Grin That's a really good site from a cursory look. Thanks for the link. I've been using Tracking the Eye from hurricanesoftware.com . It's a really good program with pretty much all the info at your fingertips. Having another source of info is always good where a hurricane is concerned though.

I second that. I had a look and although we don't have any problems with hurricanes here, I'm quite interested in how weather works. I'm not too far away from that satelite receiving station - I regularly drive past the building - and I didn't even know the dish was there - small worldSmile...

To all of you that live in those areas that are getting hit by the hurricanes etc, good luck, I hope you come out the otherside fully intact. I live 50km's from an active volcano and about 20km's from the fault line. Luckily for us it has been quiet for a long time but one day I could wake up in the middle of the night hearing the earthquake roaring its way towards my house, unfortunately once you can hear it there is sod all you can do!
