So I was working on the exes computer and she got a new flat panel monitor.

If I set the display adapter to the panels best res of 1380x1050 ? then the the desktop becomes sort of a virtual desktop which is actually larger than the panel and you have to move the mouse to the edge to make the desktop move all the way over...

Anyway, she only has the default video drivers. I don't remember installing anything else (like the bloatware that usually comes with video drivers)

Is there a settings, tweak, hack, etc that I can adjust the actual desktop dimensions to match the display adapter's dimensions? Or is that something that the bloatware would help with...?

thanks...

This under vista? Anyway, if you right click the desktop and choose something like: "adjust to your liking" (translation is mineWink) you get a menu where you can choose to change the screen-preferences.

Edit: I reread your post and I think you already did what I wrote. I couldn't imagine you didn't know that route.:o

Probably just the default drivers not doing a good enough job. I would suggest installing the proper drivers for the video

The only time I saw that was with a laptop, when you cranked the resolution higher then the display could handle.
The controls for that were a part of the video driver, not XP.

Is 1380x1050 really the native resolution. An odd number. It sounds like it is trying to display it on a 1280x1024 screen, which is a much more common size. And you get the effect you mention.

it's 13?0 by 10?0 for sure.... Thought for sure remembered 1380x1024... And the monitor actually says it's trying to optimize for that res... yeah it sounds like odd res, but I've seen others since...

mvandere Wrote:That's a feature that came in with early panels to enable a setting larger than the panel's capabilities.

I think your panel is not capable of 1380x1050, try 1028x768 and work your way around Rolleyes

Early panels only displayed at 1 resolution, if you set the display lower than than you got a variously sized window on your panel, if you set it higher you got the effect you are seeing now.

More recent panels try to fudge the resolution to be always 'full screen' if the actual display resolution is greater than that selected. Thus you may see a full screen at 640x480, 800x600 and 1024x768 on a 1024x768 display. The only giveaway is that the quality at the lower resolution is usually quite inferior.

It's a newer panel that always shows full screen except with said behaviour

This sounds like typical behavior I have found when the video drives don't support the monitor size. Tell her size doesn't matter.
