so now I go into the 'being edited' and it has jumped from 2 pages to 11!

And all I just wanted to talk about was .NET!

A beast has arisen?

Steeb

My thoughts are that a page that's just being edited, means I may be working on the page at any moment, and two cooks isn't good on a wiki.

Pending Proof means, I've completed the bulk of what I intended; ready for someone else to sign off.

Having both tags indicate, I'm also proofreading the pages, but not so much, and I won't mind having someone else jump in and tweak the spelling, plurals, grammer etc.

I'd like concepts, structure, significant word choice, to be discussed here though...

Quite right, it did sound like I was complaining, I wasn't. Badly written posts from me, in some ways.

Think I just need to understand the whole concept of how I can add to this:

So spelling and grammatical errors should just be edited straight? If you've chosen the page to allow this function? If not post here?

Non mention of .NET 3.0 0n Quick Start should be mentioned here first?

Forget your sticky P, I've got a sticky U and T, OK not as fun as a sticky P.

Cheers

For this, I'm in work mode. erhaps I should be smiling more. But it's saracsm, and dry comments. Don't mean ANYTHING bad by it. It's all good... Let's get our hands dirty and overhaul the wiki.

You've mentioned Dot Net before, even saying that that was your main goal, to add info.

But why? GB-PVR doesn't need Dot Net 3.0. It needs 2.0 and updates.

Do you want mention that .net 3 is supsoed to be backward compatible, so go ahead and install it and you won't break anything?

Should we say the same thing for 3.5? How about Service Pack 3

The quickstart is much longer than before. But that's because it needs to be at least this long, to get the structure of the process from downloading to using...

I don't want to put too much information on the first couple of pages. I want that info to be located inside, in the manual itself.

This is the concept:

Page One:

Wiki Title: Frogs are evil

Introduction
This wiki is degined to explain how all frogs are evil. You will find information to determine whether your pet is a frog, whether a toad is considered a frog, and whether you should actually contribute to a wiki about evil frogs

Table of Contents
Amphibians in General
 • Remember ALL frogs are evil. Even the prince kind. Esecially the prince kind
Evil and Good Frogs
 • More than likely you didn't read the preceding topic. Otherwise you wouldn't be reading this one. For more information, see, Page: What haens when you refuse to take directions by the editor...
But I have a Toad, does that matter?
 • It all depends on whether it is evil or not
How to tell if your frog is evil
I'm sorry but I'm tired and I have no more energy to talk about evil frogs. If you would like to continue on your own, please google 'evil frogs'
---

Hah... My point is, the quick start is a list of really short ideas. Some people, all they do is skim. If anyone needs more info, like troubleshooting, they have to go a couple of pages deeper...

I've broken that rule with the system requirements. It should be on the Download and INstall page. But it's so freaky important that people read this, I put it on the front too...

So, do you think dot 3 is freaky important to be on the skim page?

If you do, that's cool, we'll do it, but I really think it would be a detail rather than a skim point...

LOL, no sarcasm and jinks taken but loved this post.

I have some more stupid stuff to respond with, but now is not the time, as late here in UK and my Wife awaits me.

Seriously on .NET why not just do a 3.0, it seems to work OK for me with GBPVR, and if you should say install the brilliant VidImport utility that now requires .NET 3.5.

So why stick on 2.0 is this just a Minimum Requirement?

You upped the system minimals why not just give a lead to those fresh off the base a free upgrade?

Cheers

The application is built against .NET 2.0, so this is the minimum requirement. I wouldnt want to misrepresent it as requiring any later version of the runtime when thats not the case. Also, the size has drastically increased between versions. With .NET 2.0 the user had to download a 20MB installer. With .NET 3.5 the user has to download a 230MB installer. I pity the poor user trying to download that over dialup...

At some stage I will move to a later version of the development tools, which may prompt a change in this minimum version of .NET, but for now it is .NET 2.0.

I appreciate sub checking in...

I look at it similarly.

My purpose for doing what I'm doing (and certainly after 'someone' said "Take command, Zehd") (and after being sheer pissed with the wiki) (And people complaining about the wiki) is this:

THIS IS HOW YOU DO IT!

No 'if' and 'maybe's or 'you might want to' or 'if it's sunday, you might need'...

The quick start should read just like a WELL WRITTEN Quick start for a toaster or a TV.

Plug it in, turn it on, change channels (insert bread - respectively)

So that means, Don't mess with GB-PVR unless you have the computer to do it. Install this this and this, Turn this on, and turn this off.

Wait for smoke to settle and wait for toast to pop up, and then watch what you've just recorded.
----

If you (and all reading this) wouldn't mind, lets not debate some things, that I'm quite versed at explaining (Just hit 4000 posts this week)

Sure, keep me in check. I've been set straight a few times already; I'm sure a few more...

I DO NOT want to stifle content, suggestions or (did I say) content.... This is a huge job, and I'd love as much help as possible

And help with spelling, or typos, or even help with a better way to describe a concept is awesome... But I've got a plan. As verbose as my presence is, I want to make the wiki as short, concise and easy to use as possible... GB-PVR is NOT a toaster...

I'm fairly good natured, and like to joke, but that doesn't mean that it's not time to move on...

Brilliant,

no point quoting from super eloquence, zehd. I would like to examine typos etc and have, perhaps, the occasional question, otherwise it seems best to leave Wiki stuff to the super gurus.

I was just trying to establish the total view on this, and, should have said, great that you are doing such amazing work updating the wiki.

I'll keep quiet now Big Grin

Although your mention of toast has made me somewhat hungry.....

Sssshh Steeb, ssshhhh

Zehd, I have stated before how much I appreciate your efforts on improving the documentation. In the past week or so I have given the accesibility/documentation problem some thought.
I have seen new users finding it difficult to get a start. I see some of the veterans state that GB-PVR is difficult to get started and we have to accept that. I do not accept that this software should exclusively be for the nerds. I remember myself having difficulty getting started at first a couple of years ago. Last summer I built a new machine and was nervous about the re-install. What actually happened was that it went like a breeze. Of course the whole package has become much better and more stable. But what helped most was I now understood the concept. I knew why I was doing things.
A more helpful post from Steeb was to suggest a kind of Excutive Summary. Not for the lazy reader, but to get the basic concept of GB-PVR understood. If I open the wiki these days, the homepage states what this wiki is and how it serves the community. Rather technical! That information is necessary, but imho not on the main entry page. It was usefull there when the whole project started, but now we do attract a different community with different information needs. We would need a one page starter describing in simple words the GB-PVR basics. Something similar to what Mixman has suggested for the GB-PVR homepage. From there only a few links to essential starting points like the 'quickstart', which actual should be named 'basic installation' (but let us not discuss that at the moment).

English is not my native language, but if you find my view an attractive alternative, I am happy to produce a first draft for such a page, which I happily leave for you to use or shred Smile
Thanks, Pieter
