I'm in trouble. I volunteered to record "The diary of Anne Frank" series on BBC and I did, but now that I come to check the recordings is says that they are HD and the stored files are .ts instead of the .mpg I was expecting.

What is going on? I'm confused yet again

The type of file you end up with depends the mux that was used for doing the recording. The TS Mux produces .dvr-ms files. The DVR-MS mux produces .dvr-ms files. The Cyberlink and ATI muxes produce .mpg files. See mux setting on the Misc2 tab of the config app.

H.264 channels like BBC-HD are always recorded with the TS Mux (to .ts files).

There are many free converters that will convert the ts to mpeg.
HDTVtoMPEG is one.

Thanks for the replies. I see I've got more learning and some work to do.

One more thing; I can't play these recordings back. I just get a black screen. I guess I need a decoder I don't have. Any suggestions?

I'm pretty sure VLC Media Player will work.

Actually I discovered that the video library has a trancode TS to MPEG2 profile that becomes available when you select a .ts file.

But that won't work if the file is HD (H264) will it? It might have to be converted to an MKV if it's got a AVC / H264 stream in there.

oops, I think you're right. I forgot about the HD reference - sorry.
