So what's the rest of the story? That blog is almost three weeks old, did you get an RMA for it? If so have you received another drive? If so how's it operating?

Sorry to leave you hanging there, SLR_65 ![]() My decision was to exchange it for a 1TB WD Caviar Black. Maybe RMA'ing it for a replacement would have gotten me a HDD that worked, but I wanted to get my PVR up and running, and not toss the dice again in the hope of getting a functional drive.

I just checked my new drive on the Seagate site and they say with SD37 I don't need to update the firmware.
I yanked it out of the enclosure and will put it in service today. Hoping to have only good things to post in the future.

I'm a network tech for a small IT firm, and we have been using seagate and western digital for years. The recent firmware issues have caused a number of problems....so we have stayed away from seagate for now. Obviously there are way too many variables involved for my views on this to be scientific.....but we wind up with more dead seagates back in the shop than western digital, for what it's worth.

Actually, you may very well have been having the problem with the drive going dead for a while, and that being what caused the drive to drop back to PIO mode. When Windows has problems with a drive, it'll automatically start dropping to slower speed modes until the problems go away or it ends up in PIO mode. Personally, I'd get the firmware update if you haven't already. |
