I use MVPs for live TV and watching recordings so I record DVB-T to MPEG2 using the Cyberlink mux, edit out ads with MPEG_Streamclip and leave it like that... I do tend to buy disks though...

I am planning on having a go with the ts mux soon...

I used MeGUI to encode to Xvid. I'm starting to mess with h264 but it's still Xvid so I can play files on my DVD player.

I only encode stuff to play on my Blackjack pocket pc smartphone (2 hour movie = 300MB) and the occasional DVD (2 hour DVD = 750MB) to store forever if I like the movie. I use pocketdivxencoder to go from mpeg, DVD, or larger AVI to .avi XVID. Standard def stuff from GBPVR I use stattick's scripts (which is also xvid I think), but dvr-ms hi def, i'm stumped. DVRMSToolkit looks like it works, but then I have to go from that to MPEG2 to AVI (so it's DVR-MS->MPEG2->AVI, too many steps.)

From my limited knowledge of the subject I understood that the good rips (such as as axxo's) are 2-pass encoding similar to what you would get with autogk. I thunk that the key thing they do is to drop the resolution down but still keep a reasonable bit rate. This helps to keep the file size down.

I think that the 2-pass xvid encodes from Stattik's script produce similar results.

Can people post their x264 command lines? I'm like to switch from Xvid to x264, but it seems like you need a lot more command line options to get good x264 results. I currently use Xvid 2-pass using mencoder.

I'd change my vote to XviD more than likely after today...
