Hi

I've just got meself a BluRay drive (LiteOn External USB reader). And have been thinking that when I start getting some disks I should rip them to the server, and maybe convert them to MKVs.

I've found a couple of free programs DVDFab HD and I think another one. But the most popular one seems to be that AnyDVDHD. Is it any good? and is it work the $79 EUR for a 2 year subscription (what's up with that pricing model???)

i think that's only for updates for that long.. the program will continue to work forever, but only allow updates for new protection schemes for 2 years...
it's most reliable way to rip the disks raw...converting is then up to something else...
it can make dupe .iso directly tho..Smile

i just use tsremuxer or tsmuxgui to rip to movie only and join them, then ffmpeg for quick conversions...or anything you like that can read .ts or .m2ts files...

hard drive space will go very quickly with bluerays..keep 40 or so gigs just for temp space!...Big Grin

i have successfully converted some into indecernable, same resolution mpeg2 files from 30 gigs m2ts down to 4 gigs .mpg...and it looked great...[Die Hard 'live free']
like real dvd content, it's extremely compressable, but has high peaks on motion so adjust accordingly..

should be able to make any disk to a <10gig transcode...
tho with the newness of the standards it's still a bit hit and miss on the conversions..
[and that TrueHD audio funny business to work around]

ta, just trialling it now, currently ripping my new copy of Ironman.

Then i'll see if I can figure out how to convert it to h.264 - hoping to get it below 8gb.

they can be either mpeg2, H.264 or VC-1...never know...
mpeg2 is easiest to convert...VC_1 the trickiest to convert for me...

Have no idea what this is I think vc-1. I'm dropping it to 1280x720p. But its a pretty slow process. So I'll see how it comes out.
