Correct me if I am wrong, but I understand that the HVR 1600's S-video input uses the same MPEG encoder as the analog tuner.

I would like to connect the set top box's S-video output to the S-video input on the HVR1600 (and control the box with the IR blaster on the MCE remote receiver).

In this scenario, where I have two analog sources and I digital, will I be able to record three shows (2 analog and 1 digital) at the same time or can the MPEG encoder be used by only one of the analog sources (either S-video or analog tuner but not both) at a time?

Just wanted to see if anyone might know the answer before I start down this path.

Thanks,
-Topper

I have this exact setup that you describe. You can only record 1 analog and 1 digital at the same time with the configuation you describe. This is because of what you expected, the MPEG encoder is shared between the S-Video and the Analog Cable input.

I haven't tried it but if I understand correctly there is a way to enable multiple digital recordings, if that helps you at all. It doesn't for me since I only get about 3 digital channels at the moment and it is rare I would need to record two digital channels at the same time.

What I was thinking of doing for myself and maybe you would want to consider it is getting another "cheap" tuner card supported by GBPVR to use the S-Video for the Set Top Box.

nope, can only record 2 sources at any one time on that one...one digital...one analog..
and yes the analog encoder is shared with the tuner...
there is a haupp. card which can do what you wish all in one, but another digital tuner would be cheaper...
[i think the hvr2250 can do 4 at once,2 dig.2 analogs...]

no, the 2250 has two hyrbid tuners. strictly 2 programs at once, but can be both digital, both analog, or one of each. there is no hauppauge card that is literally equivalent to two 1600's or two 1800's.

If you have multiple tuner cards, each with a blaster. How do you determine which blaster controls which STB? Example I have a PVR-150 and a PVR-1600 each have a plug in for a blaster bud that I can attach to a STB. Will GBR automaticly send the channel changes to the correct box or is there something I need to set up 1st?
