Not GB-PVR related but as there was a YouTube plugin briefly in an older version, I thought I'd ask here...

What would I use to download a YouTube video?

I just went to look at a YouTube video that a friend of mine was involved with and it appears that WMG (Warner Music Group) are doing some sort of fascist legal thing with YouTube and the soundtrack has been cut.

The video itself was privately written, filmed, directed, edited and is a 14 minute comedy and the only thing I can think is that the last 30-45 seconds while the credits are running uses 'Joy To The World' aka 'Jeremiah was a Bullfrog' as a backing. For that, WMG forced YouTube to pull the plug on the entire 14min soundtrack???

If the sound has simply been disabled for playback then I'd like to download a copy to keep. Sheesh - it's not as if these guys made any money out of it - they even had to borrow the shovels to bury the body in the final scene. Big Grin

Cheers,
Brian

Thanks guys...

I tried the Firefox add-on but the downloaded MP4 wouldn't play on my system probably due to lack of codecs needed (I don't normally use MP4 for AV on my machine).

The pwnyoutube option for FLV gave me a playable video but the sound was still missing exactly as if I was watching it on the YouTube site. It seems like they've either ripped the audio completely out of the original or doctored it so the audio stream isn't accessible. The video plays back very jerkily which indicates loss of sync. due to the absence of the audio.

Hmmm, I wonder where WMG stand (legally) when it comes to censoring an entire piece of original work for the sake of less than one minute of perceived breach of their copyright...

Brian

yea, it's a bunch of scared little girlie men who are looking after their own rear-end, and who hired lawyers who don't know what they're doing, and laws that are so vague, they don't want to take any chances they will ever get sued...

so they're always going to err on the side of arse-saving, and 'customers' are last in line..
[even if it's totally ridiculous reasoning in some cases]

Youtube downloader also works well.

http://youtubedownload.altervista.org/

It will convert content into mpeg video and mp3 sound.

i think orbit downloader is also supposed to be able to do this.

can't you just contact the friend and get a copy of the original? if the soundtrack really was excised due to a legal issue, I doubt any download program will be able to get it with sound.

It isn't so much that I really want to watch it that desperately - I'd just happened to be on YouTube the other night when it came to mind and I thought I'd look it up.

One idea of downloading was to see if it was just the YouTube player disabling the audio in realtime or if the original has been doctored.

Well, two ideas really.....the second being if I was able to download it with audio intact, I was going to upload it again with my own account to see how long it took them to disable the sound on that one. Big Grin

I had the same thing happen to me on one of the demos I made showing what the PCH could do with GBPVR. Before I made it, I even went to the trouble of going to a band's site to get sample music for the mp3 demo, but the complaint wasn't from them, it was from a random internet radio song which I let play just long enough for my 30 screen saver come up to display the Shoutcast data.

Imagine for a 34 second 128k bit mp3 clip output in analog re-recorded through a Hauppauge card and resampled again at YouTube the demo is basically a bust with 4 other minutes of silence. I accept what happened and I guess I won't be making any more demo's because it is impossible to show GBPVR without infringing on someone's rights. Is it any wonder the music industry is in trouble?
