I have a dual tuner that is quite reliable, and a third that is not, so much. I would like to keep running all three, but only if I can set a priority so that the system always uses the first two tuners unless they are both busy, then falls back on the third. At the moment, the software seems to select from among the three tuners fairly randomly.

Its not random. The priority of the tuners is set by their order in the capture sources screen.

When scheduling recordings the system will work its way down the capture source list from the top, looking for an available tuner with the requested channel. The only time it typically varies this behaviour is when it is set to always try to record padding, then it'll look for another available tuner if their is an adjacent recording.

OK. This is what I assumed, because I had the "poor" tuner installed before the others. It was first on the list in the capture sources screen, and it always took priority when I requested a channel.

I deleted all the tuners, and reinstalled them in the other order. The "poor" tuner still always takes priority when I request a channel. I reinstalled them in the reverse order, and it still activates first every time. The only way to get either of the other tuners to activate is to keep the first one busy with a recording.

On the Capture Sources tab, there are two unlabelled buttons under the Remove button. Click on a tuner and then you can use these two buttons to move the tuners up and down the list.

I have had problems in the past where the list of channels for each tuner has not been as I expected (a symptom of too much fiddling about!).

I've now noticed that this is only the case when watching a channel, not recording it. The recordings seem to behave as you described, with the top of the capture sources list taking priority. However, when I watch a channel, it always defaults to the poorer tuner, whether it is first or last on the list.

Those buttons are quite a tip. They stand to save me hours of experimentation time. Wish I'd asked the question this morning.

I know what you mean about the channel lists, and I have been there myself. However, this is a consistent issue with every channel. When I watch them (as opposed to record them) they choose the inferior tuner.

It selects tuners for Live Tv from the bottom up.

Thus my impression that it was random--one way for recordings, the other way for Live TV. Any way to control this? Can I create a copy of the good tuners for Live TV purposes, and another copy for recording purposes?

add the tuners from the top in the order you want priority for recording
then you can add the same tuners again for live tv from the bottom
yes can have the same tuner added twice in the list

Its done that way to minimise the chances that live tv and recordngs will be one the same tuner and interfere with each other.
