Does anyone use a ps3 to watch "ts" files over their network ?
does it work?
are there any tweaks or pitfalls ?

thinking of buying one instead of another pc
then i get a bluray player a game console and since i dont really need to have a full pvr for where I want to use it.
I was wondering if it would do what i want

also hoping i wouldnt have to shage around with codecs etc as its for my projector and you really notice it when its wrong

not sure if they natively take ts files, you might need tversity or something to stream it to the ps3 native format.

And when you say ts files, are these dvb-s or dvb-t?

good point they will be dvb-s to start with
ive stayed away from dvb-t. files are to big and the aac audio (maybe in the near future i have a hvr4000 but dont use the dvb-t tuner)
now that prime has gone digital i have a extra slot

Then apart from maybe the filename (I don't have a ps3) you should be sweet since the files are just mpeg2. So maybe you'll have to rename/remux the ts to mpeg.

Again tversity may be an option it should still however do what you want. Let us know how you get on.

just to give my experience with tvversity and ps3 streaming/transcoding.

I was using it for about 2months (until i got another dedicated HTPC). it worked mostly fine with small files, couldnt really handle a dvd/iso or any 1080p mkvs. cant remember how well it handled 720p. but fastfowarding/skipping over a file was a PITA (which i expected, its transcoding it after all). and to get the PS3 to actually see the server, woudlnt work all the time, i just found it too unreliable and frustrating to use. it never really "just worked", it always required some fiddling, evey time. not worth it in my opinion.

its fine if you only want to play the odd video (say 2 a month), but if you want to use it on a regular, or semi regular basis, i wouldnt recommend it.

if u only want to play small files (nothing 1080p, maybe 720p) and you're after a cheap solution, i would look into an original xbox running xbmc. they should be pretty cheap these days, then you might still have enough to get the ps3 for gaming/bluray.

I use PS3 Media server for streaming to my PS3. Check out http://code.google.com/p/ps3mediaserver/downloads/list. It works great.

another user of ps3 media server. works great and you can tweak it to stream the raw ts file for no quality loss. i've found tversity to require too much overhead and the directory scan takes too long.

however, i've found the ps3 to be picky with the recordings from some channels in my area - some play fine, others not so much. remuxing helps, but creates audio sync issues. i am currently working to see if the stream ids set by the channels is causing my problem.
