As title says, it would be very useful to have an option to restart the Recording Service from the System screen.

This wouldnt be possible on Vista/Win7, unless PVRX2 is always run with 'run as administrator'. Restarting services is a privileged activity.

I run with UAC off, and I know many others do as well. Yes, there's been much discussion on whether this is a good idea, etc. etc. However for me the benefits of turning off UAC far outweigh the extremely limited benefit of having it on; the HTPC is a dedicated box which doesn't browse the web or open e-mails. For a general use computer that *also* functions as a GB-PVR server it would be a different story.

By the way, on a related note, I found on Win7 setting the option "<HideTrayServiceRestartOnVista>false</HideTrayServiceRestartOnVista>" doesn't put the restart option back on the tray menu either?

i know its not ideal but just add a external task with link to the restart recording service
you have to type the bat file in when you browse to the folder as external tasks only shows .exe files when you browse

1. If PVRx2.exe runs as administrator there is no need to turn off UAC

2. As stustunz said the following custom task batch file will do this.

net stop "GB-PVR Recording Service"
net start "GB-PVR Recording Service"

If PVRX2.exe runs as administrator, but UAC isn't off, then you'll get a UAC pop-up every time PVRX2 runs... not very conducive to the seemless HTPC experience. We're just going to have to agree to disagree about the merits of running a GB-PVR HTPC with or without UAC.

Yes, I knew I could do it with a custom task. I just thought the function would be suitable for inclusion on the System Menu for all to use without figuring out how to create a custom task. It seems like a System sort of function, like Shutdown, Restart, etc.

Agreed that it isn't pretty, but let's face it your solution is a hack and would not be useful very often. It would be much better to figure out what is wrong with your system that causing you to need the feature.

Well, I too am having an issue that restarting the service nightly may help me get by. I get failures after a week or so if I have not cycled the service. Looking for the issue, but meantime would be nice to cycle the service to keep peace in the house until the issue can be resolved.

If I make the aforementioned batch file, how do I set it to run nightly? I am in Windows XP MCE, running latest GBPVR.

Thanks
Chuck

if you wanted to run it automatically you would create a scheduled task (programs->accessories->system tools).

Having multiple clients, I wouldn't want any of them to be able to reset the recording service! TBH the only time I have ever needed to reset is when I want to ensure logs are flushed and rolled over to enable moving.

I used to run reset as part of my resume from hibernate batch file, but rem'd it out a long time ago.
