Curious, what does UAC awareness have to do with installing skin files? Is it due to the common location of "C:\Program Files\" in most cases and write premissions? I have installed GBPVR in a separate drive with UAC in the default windows 7 setting, so maybe I haven't noticed something I should be aware of.

UAC should not affect Skin File installation as long as an installer is used. Vista/Win 7 automatically require elevated permissions for certain file names that it deems to be an installer (Setup.exe, [Some] Installer.exe, etc.)

Once the skin files are installed (or plugins for that matter) it will be GBPVR that actually requests/runs with the elevated privileges.

Now if you were writing a separate executable from GBPVR (JavaWiz's BDA Migration Tool for example), that would need to be compiled to require elevated privileges if you didn't want the end user to have to right click and "Run as Admin".

I prefer UAC off for convenience but I also don't run AV. I don't recommend that to my clients. Since most of them don't take the security measures that I do when using computers, UAC and AV are good ideas for them. As Martin said, UAC should be decided for your particular case.

Simple reason for this. The plugins don't register themselves in Windows Add/Remove Programs list so it thinks they didn't install correctly.

Do we want to do this for our installer and add a registry setting?

I found the dev process is a complete nightmare with UAC enabled on my Dev machine, Therefore it was easier just to turn it off....

I've got a library/dll which checks UAC and runs the installer and/or exe's with elevation to ensure we manage the UAC properly....

That's odd my NSIS installers don't write to the registry and I don't get any warnings on Vista. I wonder if this is a Win 7 change?

You can also do it with a manifest file: http://www.professionalvisualstudio.com/...-on-vista/
