I had similar problems when using my whole collection. It seemed like the sub-folders were the problem. I have a favorites folder now with ~1000 photos in it with no problems (though they are down-res'ed to display on a TV so they don't take up as much memory ~200 MB)
Server - AMD 6 Core windows 10 with Hauppage WINTV-PVR2 USB2, HDHomerun Dual, and WINTV-HVR 1600 tuners | Clients -PCH A-100 and iOS

Thanks for the hint about this and using it for the Windows Screensaver in the other thread. It appears with EVR in Win 7 that it locks up GBPVR completely when it kicks in, even when using a basic screen saver such as the digital clock.

Are you saying that it it locks up with EVR but is ok with other renders?
What skin are you using? Can you zip and attach your pvrx2.exe.log file.

I'm migrating my setup from XP to Win 7 and since the wife and kids are back, I've put the XP drive back in for their use. I would suggest trying the blue skin.
