ntfs links are like shortcuts to directories...only nothing knows the difference..
[see link in my sig]

thank you so much for all of this. I guess I completely misunderstood the legacy issues with XP 64. Maybe another time, though, or maybe Windows 7 by then.

NTFS links...very cool. I've often imagined something like that. Does your app ask the question when the recording is being set up? I will definitely be using this once I am stable again.

what else are you using the machine for ?

Nothing particularly drive-intensive...it just goes back to when I was complaining that three simultaneous recordings seemed to be struggling, and I sometimes even wonder if two are getting it right.

Also, I'm hoping disk performance might help speed boot times.

[quote=pBS]yep, gotta re-install if going to ahci...CoolQUOTE]

Please let me know if this seems safe to you:

- Set BIOS to AHCI
- Install Windows
- Use system and data drive at IDE speeds until later when:
- Install drivers from motherboard disk.

If you think that is safe, I will proceed. Otherwise, I will just configure as IDE until I learn more.

...but presumably they are not running in IDE mode.

Actually, I am thinking that I'd better not risk this for now. After some reading, I think that I will struggle with compatibility when trying to restore my backups. Since I have to reinstall anyway, I will back up the data drive afterward, and do this properly in a few days when I can reformat it.

Well, then I guess I will just go IDE for now. I suspect I will be reinstalling A LOT over the next few days, anyway. Although, BigMoose was saying that going AHCI made a huge difference to his system. So, on third thought, I will risk going AHCI from the start, and redo it if it doesn't work. However, I'd feel better if someone could reassure me that this does not create risk to my data; it's not going to lash out and reformat without permission, is it?

Maybe I'll just unplug the data drive for now.

Well, I just made my first attempt to boot from the setup CD. BSOD. I have set the drive type back to IDE in case that is the reason. "Just reinstall" is looking like a less desirable option minute by minute. I sure hope my data drive didn't get corrupted.

RAID is not complicated at all. It's just that you need two drives instead of one, but yes, they have to be reformatted. Your bios will do the job for you, and once the drives are set up it looks just like any harddrive, but with twice the speed.

Now, if one drive in a two-drive array fails, it is true that you loose all data. However, that is true for ANY drive that fails Big Grin. And how often does a drive actually crash?
