looks like the DMCA, will be attempt to be jamed down your throat no matter were you live in this world.. canada reject the idea the US, is trying to force on us, last week, but like little children the US goverment, took it usual stance, of bruised ego. " We reject your rejection, and you're going to do what we want, because it good for the whole world" ( blah blah ).. now will come the illegal sanctions against Canada again ( in the form tarrifs. ie softwood, pork, and a ton of other stuff, the US economy does not know how to compete in an open economy, it only can by bulling or subsidy)

since Austrialia, New Zealand and pretty much most of the world is simular to the view of the canadians. I would expect your goverments will be put under the simular pressure as Canada is now..

And Canada will do what it's always done. Tell the US to go @#$%#$&^ themselves, and then eventually cave in and do whatever the US wants anyhow.
We're a bunch of stupid sheep (generally) and can't seem to make up our minds about anything, without someone else hypnotizing us.
There are a few cases, where we STILL do things OUR way...FairUse is one of them. Smile

well I hope not, it depends, who remains in power I guess with the next elections, I can not see the liberals giving in ( stanch believer in canadiana). but the PC under the control of that reform guy- steven harper. perhaps their world wide point of view is better now then it use to be, since the two party joined together. but I dought it, he is a reformist and his views were strange back then when he was a reform party member now the leader of PC.. leaves me a bit to wonder if I would want him as leader Canadian goverment ??? not likely and I am a PC, but foremost I AM CANADIAN, ( sounds like a beer commerial) and I vote on how I feel it would better canada the most.. I think I will vote the green party . it a wasted vote but atleast it a vote for the right direction.. and hope the liberals stay with a slim miniorty goverment.. until they get rid of that steven harper guy. and go with a central canada PC representitive that of more moderate open minded grounds...

I think dmca is a bad thing ( the US version - perhaps a canadian version would be tolerable), and I can live with it if if get passed, but aleast it not as bad as weaponizing space which is worse thing they could do....trying to start another arms race...

I don't think the court battle over DCMA v 321's DVD copy program has gotten to the Surpreme Court, so it may not even be legally enforceable in the long run yet. I'd wait for it it be tested before sweating it too much (unless you want to protest in advance, in which case, have at it). Besides, it seems like any law made in one administration can just be tossed out in the next, and the at the speed of tech, any law like it is shortsighted.

My biggest complaint with the united states government is they do not serve the people they serve big business and lobbies. DMCA is such an infrigement of fair use it is nausiating. Hopefully the rest of the world will resist the US pressure. And one day maybe we (the US) will get someone like Lessig to the Supreme Court. And correct some of our insane Patent and Copyright laws.

I love this country, but I hate our politicians. Greedy, incompitent bastards.

I don't pretend to understand it but surely employing lobbist to help politicians to support the big companies causes seems to me against the idea the politicians acting on the behalf of his/her voters the comman man or woman. It just seems like legal corruption to me, maybe its more complicated than this (generally is) but it just seems wrong on all levels.

I absolutely despise the DCMA, it's almost complete curtailment of fair use and other attrocious side effects, as well as upcoming stuff like the broadcast flag. However, I can't say that I'm surprised by it. The collective internet community must shoulder some of the responsibility for it since it never would have happened if so many people hadn't jumped onto Napster and the like. The music companies may be giant evil corporations that make too much money, but illegally copying music is still wrong.

The mass of people who have and continue to use the internet to copy content illegally are just as responsible for the DCMA as the music and entertainment companies. Both are responsible for making my use of music and other entertainment I've legally purchased more restricted, and it ticks me off.

Tim

P.S. I must say, I like Canada's flat net tax approach to dealing with music copying. If I understand it correctly (and I might not) it's not really fair since it makes all internet users subsidize the music "purchases" of others, but it's not a terrible burden and it's still a good example of creative thinking and interesting legislation.

just so you know the, the canadian "flat net tax" has being put off the table for now.. but basically at the time of discussion it was a five dollar "tax" per each intenet connection, I believe per month.( was to generate about 250 million per year) but the canadian goverment found the cost abit unfair to internet user in general- painted with to wide of a brush.. but I do not think it is dead completely it just being sidelined for now.. so for now there is only the the tax on all mp3, and other portable media stuff.. whiich allows canadains to download ( but not upload) and to my understanding reached~100 million dollars collected or something like that.. which is probably more then all the money recovered, from all the people posecuted around the world for downloading music...

Then we also have the "royalty" fee on blank media. I don't remember exactly what it is, but every time you purchase a CDR, you pay a fee (on top of the taxes), which is supposed to go to the Canadian recording artists association...
