On XP, you can create a \Users\Public\NPVR folder on any drive and share it, just edit the registry entry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\NPVR\DataDirectory to point to your new directory and move all your npvr datafiles files there.

Thanks I'll give that a try and see if that solves my problems. If it does it I would recommend sub changes the default directory in the next update.

OK I got it to stream via the recording service ... well kinda. I not only had to move the data directory and entry in the Registry I also had to make a firewall exception for port 8968. That got everything working and as I suspected the dodgy behavior of the tray applet went away.

The problem is the streaming 'engine' is very inefficient. I can open the recording as a file share from the main menu and it will play back in NPVR great using a network bandwidth of around 3.5 Mb/s but if I stream the same recording through the Recording plugin it's choppy and basically unwatchable as it's overloading the network using a 8-10Mb/s and looks like it wants to use more but the network is the limiting factor. It's about the same streaming live TV. This definitely needs to be addressed because the entire point of using streaming over file sharing to to cut the network overhead not increase it 100-150%. I almost looks as if it's trying to use the bandwidth of a HDTV signal even streaming an SDTV signal. I'll record a HDTV show and use file sharing to sent it to the client and I bet it uses the same amount of bandwidth I'm seeing streaming an SDTV show.

I'll try to design a more 'scientific' set of tests and then post the results and logs. BTW now that I got everything communicating properly the logging in the debug mode is very nice and makes it nice to try out the different forms of rending and codecs and having a nice log of exactly what you did.

I'm getting closer to what I need, when sub polishes up the core functions to this program the rest of the bells and whistles should fall nicely into place.

Good good. I'v also noticed that playing a file over network/share is much smoother than streaming it via npvr/gbpvr, but I'v never actually looked at the network load. I'd be interested to see what you come up with.
