Choose another colour !
As I mentioned earlier in this thread, I am a fan of an abstract name (such as handbrake) rather than "something-PVR". If Sub has a vision for an application that does more than record TV shows,, then we are into "media centre" / HTPC, not "PVR" territory. And just to be literal about PVR for a moment:- Personal - No, with the media extenders and web server, the app brings media to the whole family. Video - Well it also handles music, photos and weather Recorder - Actually playback is a very significant aspect of npvr as well as its recording capabilities. Playback over extenders, the client, DVD, web server, blueray (hopefully). cu

I don't believe this is just a PVR, and I think that is very 'old hat'. One word has been running through my mind about this the last couple of days Cube don't know why, actually means nothing ![]() CubeMC CubeDVR CubePVR all available no colours there (but no Sub or GB either ![]() Steeb

Forgot we can't edit this thread!
Even weirder suggestion: Cubebus Could be pronounced coo-b-boose (got Sub's name in backward's.) I like that 'cos it sort of looks like Latin or something, but really means nothing at all. Please someone tell me to stop posting on this thread and I'll do my best ![]()

I thought this info was so relevant.
From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digsby: Name and Mascot The name Digsby was thought of as a name that was simple, easy to spell and remember, something that sounded like fun, and most importantly, something that had yet to be registered as a .com domain name. The Digsby mascot was designed by Hewlett Packard's Logoworks. The idea was to have an actual mascot, rather than just a logo. Quoting Steve [Shapiro, founder], "We really liked Digsby because we could have a mascot instead of just a logo - someone who would be Digsby." If we want to make a clean start, i.e. no PVR, MC, or any other abbreviations, that is the way to go - create a word, simple, easy to spell and remember. I could not shake the old baggage of GB-PVR yet, so I played a bit with G and B, and found a couple available .com domains: geemby granbo

When Eastman founded his photographic film company he said: "... and the name is Kodak because it is a good word and it does not mean anything".
I'm not fond of including a coulor in the name, people assosiate different things with colours in different cultures. But if we should choose a name considering what the product does, something like DvrNow! is a short, easy pronounced name wich also sounds loud. And it IS a digital video recorder. On the other hand, with all the plugins it is also an information center (weather, RSS reader etc), so maybe someone can come up with a short, easy name thet reflects both these aspects. Ok I was not going to post again either but it seems most want to move away from PVR Something so in that case lets look at something MMC or MMC something, MMC standing for "Mult-Media Center". Reason is this app does more then just record TV, it supports multi video types, music and photos not counting all the plugins it support as well so I think we should be looking at it being some type of MMC. Have no idea at this time what MMC is should be called but something to think about.

Now I am torn. I looked at the competition and noticed that GB-PVR is an established brand, so maybe it's a good idea to keep the GB in the name. For example, GB-MMC. Though, it is dangerously close to XBMC.
But having a new clean name (like Kodak) is good. For example, geebber or geebr. Both available in .com. geeber.com is taken. (Yes, I know, it sounds like jibber) Or maybe we can take an abbreviation and insert vowels to make easy to pronounce. For example, mumecen or MuMeCen , as in Multi-Media Center. Works for modem. P.S. I remembered the term 10-foot, but 10foot.com is taken. |
