I would definitely use it. Although some thought would have to go in to the install process - what if a plugin uses a service or other external pre-req...?

Which is kinda what worries me. By the time all the possibilities are covered, I'm concerned it would turn into something one-step-short of a full installer.

And, sure, were it to be that robust, I would probably use it too. But, were I to offer my preference, I think the time would be better spent on the npvr core. (I would far prefer a more beefy selection of UI components, for example. Probably because I sucketh at creating an attractive UI!)

No, I don't think I am wrong in my position but I certainly don't want sub to ever stop features because of me. Improving the core is a much better idea.

I would have to agree with Martin here. I think a plugin manager is a good idea, but I don't think sub should be taking time away from the core NPVR components to add a plugin manager.

Ok, I'm going to have to jump back in here because the thread has drifted away from what I originally meant Smile

I don't want Martin to stop developing plugins. Nor do I want sub to devote any less of his time to core nPVR. I was just wondering whether we - the plugin developers - could come up with something (a framework; an agreement; I don't know) that could also be developed by us, but ultimately released alongside nPVR, by sub.

As several people have pointed out though, there are problems in doing this as soon as a plugin gets complicated (services, admin rights, dependencies, etc), and it's not really anything that's needed right now, but I've found it an interesting conversation none the less.

Has anybody spent enough time with those "other" media centres to know what they offer in this area?

SageTV 7 beta had something along the lines of what you where talking about http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=niaPy7Mmgh0 I think the idea is good as NPVR matures, after all look at the success of Apple and Android app. stores.

I'd still be happy to add something like this in future if the developers are happy to use it. I dont want to waste my time on something that people wont use.
What's the status of this? Sounds like a good feature which would give the the plugin scene more exposure.

Nothing was done. There didnt seem to be any consensus in this thread, so the idea was shelved.

I was talking about this the other day on another (totally wrong!) thread after having seen a Myth set up last weekend. Also am sure I have seen SageTV users mention it a couple of times here on the forum. What would it take to get a consensus rather than a dead end or run out of steam? I think it would be something really beneficial for NextPVR to have!

cheers

As a word of comment, there is no reason that sub has to be responsible for writing a plugin manager any interested plugin developer could do it. I've used the SageTV manager and in principal all it really is in an xml file with locations for downloading & dependencies.
