One of the things I didn't like about PlayOn is the fact that to it is a transcoding streamer requiring reasonable power for on the fly playblack. I think Roku's players only play local mp4 video so you end up doing a lot of transcoding to get playback.

Appears so... It depends on the end users needs is all I was pointing out. I was thinking I could record things for my Dad, transcode/transfer to his server. Its a lot of effort, but worth it.
