I'm also repeatedly experiencing recordings (from my HD-PVR) that are resulting in a .ts file that will not play in VLC or NPVR, but will play in Windows Media Center. Usually these recordings are ones that adjoin another recording on the HD-PVR (either immediately prior to, or immediately after).

Here's the applicable snip from an example in the NRecord log:

Code:
2011-01-21 22:00:00.109    [DEBUG][7]    About to start recording (1698): E:\npvr_tv_shows\Gold Rush Alaska\Gold Rush Alaska_20110121_22002300.ts

2011-01-21 23:02:03.109    [DEBUG][7]    Graph stopped

What's happening here:

the recording of Gold Rush Alaska_20110121_21002200.ts was finishing up (this is the problem file) and then Gold Rush Alaska_20110121_22002300.ts starts recording, and finishes an hour later. The file ending at 23:00 works as expected but the file ending at 22:00 is the one that will not play back in NPVR or VLC, just WMP.

I don't have any logic in my system to disconnect/reconnect the HD-PVR. Help?

To be honest, I dont really have any suggestions for you on this one. I'm not a regular HDPVR user myself, so not intimately familar with it, and I havnt come across this problem with it resulting in a bad recording that cant be played.

NPVR/GBPVR just write the output of the device to disk, and doesnt manipulate that data in anyway, so it sounds like some condition must lead the HDPVR outputting garbage. That said, it's surprising it'll play for you in WMC. Maybe if you can post a small sample broken recording, I can take a look to see what is wrong with the file, and why it wont play in NPVR.

OK - I'll try to reproduce the issue in a shorter file size.

Just an (uneducated) guess - with a device like the HD-PVR, does it make sense to force the earlier recording to stop entirely before staring the later one? (even if they have overlapping record times because of pre/post padding)? Looking at the log it's not ending an old recording before starting a new one, maybe there's something specific to this device that doesn't like that...
