Hi, I converted my PVR to Windows 7 and it is working much better then Windows XP. The one issue I'm having is with the video lagging or stuttering so I'm wondering if I need to install a video/audio codec? I installed AC3 audio codec, maybe thats my problem. My motherboard is GA-MA785GM-US2H which has an ATI 4200 onboard video. I'm also using EVR.

I use AC3Filter for both MPEG1 and AC3 audio, with no lag or stutter. For the video decoder, I've found ATI MPEG-2, Microsoft DTV-DVD, and ffdshow to be pretty much interchangeable.

For the 4200 onboard video, which is really just a renamed 3000-series core, you may need to reduce the level of de-interlacing in Catalyst Control Center. I don't think the chip has the horsepower to do the highest levels of de-interlacing (vector adaptive) on HD MPEG-2 content.

Thanks johnsonx42, I'll give that a try and see what happens.

I have a GA-MA78GPM-DS2H (rev. 1.x) AMD 780G + SB700 Chipset I think that is similar to yours. I use the Microsoft DTV-DVD for everything except AC3 and I use ffdshow.

I am in the UK and we use MPEG-4 H.264/AVC for our HD.

On Win7, you should have no problem with that hardware. Check Task Manager to see the CPU load and what other processes are using CPU time, if any. Might also try removing any other video decoders to get a clean(er) system. The MS DTV decoder with EVR should be just fine and is where you should start. AC3 filter is needed and should not be a problem; it's always been well behaved for me. You might also try installing the video driver package from AMD, rather than using what comes with Win7 or what was on your MB driver disk. From what I see, the typical MB disk causes more problems that it solves.

Also I should mention that the ATI MPEG-2 decoder is part of the "AMD Media Codec Package" which used to be called AVIVO. It's listed in the Optional Downloads section if you choose to download drivers for a desktop Radeon HD 4000, but is not listed if you specify the integrated HD 4200. You can find it here: http://sites.amd.com/us/game/downloads/P...-32.aspx#3

Can you confirm that you use the MS DTV-DVD H264 decoder and ffdshow for AC3 for the UK HD channels? I am having bad sync issues with these channels at the moment (via DVB-S - my SD are perfect) and have been using SAF5 with the MS H264 decoder and ffdshow for audio. But that got so bad I tried AC3 Filter for audio without any real improvement.

ATI MPEG-2 decoder lack DxVA support and it cannot output to NV12 = no HW deinterlacing at all - very bad for LiveTV.
The decoder is here becouse of AVIVO encoding application, it is used for example for DVD to h.264 conversion.

You should be fine with *unlocked* SAF5 (link below).

And what video decoder to choose?

MPEG-2 LiveTV:
- i prefer FFDshow - if you will use FFDShow from SAF5, you will have black border croop, gray to black correction and HW deinterlacing as an bonus. This will make DVDs/MPEG-2 LiveTV looks perfect.

H.264 LiveTV:
- i dont have access to h.264 LiveTV, but i read on MS pages there is some problem (macro blocking) with ATI + MS video decoder for LiveTV under Win7, so my tip here is PDVD10 decoder.

h.264 videos:
- FFDshow DxVA decoder. Why? It is only one that alow DxVA + subtitles.

BTW, AC3 filter is old and it looks like developement was stoped.
It lack support for HD audio (DD Plus-EAC3) but it will auto load to decode it = no sound.
Modern FFDshow can do the same + can decode/passthrough HD audio.

I have unlocked SAF5 and used not to have these problems. I'm not sure if updating to more recent SAF5 versions or updating npvr caused my HD channel sync issues. Re the most recent cyberlink H264 decoders, I cant get the DxVA to stay selected so am not convinced it is using it. Had problems with the UK HD channels and cyberlink anyway, but am willing to re try it and ffdshow if it will play in sync.

Maybe my HD sync issues are more sinister. LiveTV is often OK (but not great, worse than SD which is fine) but when I pause for a couple of mins it is awful after the restart. Assuming I am recording, if I exit and resume playback it gets better.
