Overscan

I have a 1920x1080 display, pixel mapped 1:1 with zero overscan using the catalyst control panel. That's great for blu-rays.

With GBPVR and VMR9 the following config.xml settings exist by default:

<HorizontalOffset>0</HorizontalOffset>
<VerticalZoom>1.03</VerticalZoom>
<VerticalOffset>0</VerticalOffset>

These provide a small amount of overscan which is perfect for getting rid of those "scruffy" edges that many broadcast channels seem to have, or for avoiding uneven black borders because the broadcast doesn't fully fit its resolution.

Can I do the same in NPVR?

I can't seem to find equivalent config.xml settings, although there is a <Zoom> entry, but that just zooms everything, menus included. Perhaps it's something I should be doing via the AspectRatioModes instead (?) but you'd have no control over the Auto ratio.

Is this where I harp on the fact that if NPVR's auto mode worked the same way GB-PVR's did, then you could solve your entire problem by adjusting the <AspectRatioModes>? No, I wouldn't do that. Nevermind. That would seem WAY too much like griping.

Time for a little thread bump...

I'd still like to be able to do this. There's far too many UK SD channels showing crap around the edges (and not enough HD channels using 1920x1080 (as opposed to 1440x1080) to worry about scaling them slightly).

What GPU anf GPU=>TV connection do you have?

If you have ATI (not sure about nVidia) and HDMI, you can set zoom in CCC.

Or you can use FFDshow decoder with crop.

No, I'd rather not do that, not least because the menus in NPVR look best at 1:1, and I still play blu-rays externally with TMT3 so would want 1:1 for that too.

It's possible an "overscan" aspect ratio in config.xml may help (if I can get my ahead around its settings again), but that won't help if using auto for 4:3 content, which is usually one of the worst culprits for scruffy edges and flashing lines, etc.

So can i ask what GPU and GPU=>TV connection do you have?
If TV doesnot support underscan, i doubt it is possible to use 1:1 mapping over HDMI.

It's an ATI 5450, with HDMI out to a Pioneer Kuro KRP-500M 50" plasma screen (a giant monitor really). The PC outputs 1920x1080 and the TV is set to Dot-by-dot mode (its term for 1:1).

That is some special TV settings? I have two LCD TVs, and none of them have such mode, at last i didnt found it.
