Automatic commercial skip

In searching the forum, I found several mentions of automatic commercial skipping, but all concluded the (un)reliability of comskip made it a non-trivial task to implement. My experience with comskip has been very good, and I would definitely use an automatic comskip feature for my kids' shows, because when I'm not watching with them, I'm always running into the family room to skip commercials because I feel some of the commercial content is questionable.
I think a setting in the configuration is reasonable, since you can always disable it and restart the show if the comskip marks are incorrect.

Actually, I wouldn't label comskip "unreliable" even if it isn't perfect, and it's definitely trivial to use in GBPVR. While there are a few people that have trouble with it running, the posts I've read have been a problem with comskip, not gbpvr, and I don't think that's the norm at all.

If you install comskip to the gbpvr directory, and you don't have a postprocessing.bat file in the directory, it runs automatically everytime a recording completes. If you do have a postprocessing.bat file, you simply put "comskip %1" in it. What could be easier?

Skipping the commercials comskip identified couldn't be easier either. When you watch a show and a commercial starts, you hit the play button on the remote and it skips to the end of the commercial. It doesn't actually skip the commercial automatically so if comskip wrongly identifies a commercial in the middle of a show it doesn't matter since you aren't going to be pressing the play buttun during the mistagged interval anyway. Comskip does sometimes miss a true commercial break, but since GBPVR doesn't use comskip to actually remove the commercials but just to identify and skip them, in that instance pressing play doesn't do anything and you can manually skip forward or fast forward.

I wouldn't use comskip with a mpeg cutting tool in an unattended fashion to remove commercials because, even though I find it to be about 95% accurate, it definitely is imperfect. If I want to archive a movie I manually review the tagged commercials before cutting. However, using comskip within GBPVR is simple, non-destructive and excellently integrated.

I completely agree that comskip is reliable and well integrated into GB-PVR. I am simply asking for a way to skip commercials without any user input. For my viewing purposes, an occasional glitch is acceptable, and I would use this feature. Thanks for an incredible product!

Forgive my stupidity... I had been reading some other posts about people having trouble getting comskip to run and thought this post was referring to gbpvr not running it reliably or automatically. (I was kind of tired when I read it too, which inhibited my uptake I think ) Re-reading I realize you were referring to a feature to have gbpvr skip the commercials automatically instead of having to press play. That would be kind of nice.

I am just getting started using SA to mark commericals. I am also using rename but I have tried to watch a show in gbpvr and hit play on the commericals it doesn't skip it, or respone at all. I did notice that the rename process what renaming the .vprj and the text files in addition to the video. If gbpvr needs one of these files to be the same name as the video which file does it need? Thanks for any help on this matter.

You should be generating comskip files (.txt) with SA (you need to change this in the Output tab in SA config) - I don't think GBPVR reads .vprj files

I agree that a lot of the content in the commercials is often questionable even during shows that I feel are appropriate for my daughter to be watching. I use this method to process any recordings I make for her, so that she doesn't see the commercials.

This has been working very well for me for months now. I's not that difficult to implement and well worth it. I know that there is also comclean which does this for free but I really like videoredo.

I'm still using the videoredo method posted above, ever since I posted the original thread. It's reliable, it's fast, it works.
The only modifications I've made to the process, is to run everything in parallelprocessing.bat, so comskip finishes almost at the same time as the recording (less than 1 second later) then videoredo generates the commercial free version, and then everything but the commercial free mpg is deleted.
Optionally, you can then have the recording transcoded to xvid or divx to save space.

I agree regarding comskip in ParallelProcssing.bat (a much nicer solution) - however last time I checked SA could only be run while recording if you have the paid for version

I think jodajen2 is just looking to skip not cut commercials
