Just getting to know npvr for the first time this week, on the system in my sig. I am using Nvidia's driver from 11/01/2010 ver. 8.17.11.9621 on the graphics card, Microsoft DTV-DVD Video Decoder, "EVR" for video renderer and "Default (Recommended)" for audio renderer.

When there is a relatively static picture with only a little bit of movement on the screen, eg. a full length shot of a person and their hand moves up the screen, the object that is moving breaks up with horizontal lines. Is this what "tearing" is to any degree?

That effect is not severe, and the picture is generally quite watchable but I never saw this on my old XP/GBPVR/9600GT rig, and overall it's not as good.

When there is alot of action it seems to be worse. Does anyone have any advice?

Cheers.

I would try some other decoders and see if the problem gets worse or better. I'v had good results with the Cyberlink decoders, and make sure that dxva is used.

This is related to renderer and GPU.

This will happend if you have disabled AERO.

ATIs have vSync off by default in GPU drivers, but i am not sure about nVidia drivers...

You can try different GPU drivers too.

I've had this since day one using ATI drivers on my older ATI cards. 've tried lots of decoders and it never went away... (My newer win7 64 bit, with amd/ati video doesn't have that.)

It's undoubtedly connected with vsync... so I'd look into that in the nVidia driver... I

I had exactly the same problem last week which made moving pictures difficult to watch. As I was ill in bed I didn’t feel up to solving the problem so just replaced the video card as I have several spares. This solved the problem but the original card does not display the same problems in my spare NPVR client computer so the card is ok. Sometimes downloading the latest driver from the card manufacturer solves the problem but occasionally you just have to give up. From many years as a computer engineer I know that incompatibility issues are quite common and some cards will never work with some motherboards, which is why I have a box of video, sound & network cards as a work around.

However I have now just reinstalled the “problem” video card in my main NPVR computer. I uninstalled the Nvidia drivers and settings then rebooted. Windows didn’t have a driver so downloaded the latest from Nvidia and it now displays video correctly. I have had several other Nvidia card in the computer so perhaps an incompatible setting from the Nvidia software was being used. Nvidia cards have V sync and Timing settings under the Nvidia tab on Advanced Display Settings which may be worth playing with as a last resort.

The other thing I've noticed is that edges of things suffer from this as well. It isn't like this example (http://www.tweakguides.com/Graphics_9.html), it's like lots of lines in the edges (eg. someone's sleve will have a jagged edge, or a line of light on a dark background will be jagged, or in the moving hand example, the whole hand gets lines through it while it moves). It does sound like it's what people have said above although my exact symptoms (or descriptions) are slightly different. Forcing vsync off and on didn't seem to change it. Do vsync settings have any effect when you're using s-video?

Hey, thanks for the reply (to you and everyone actually). Should I try SAF to tackle this??

The effect you are describing is interlacing, your picture should be deinterlaced. I strongly doubt that this has anything at all to do with AERO. Try turning deinterlace on, preferably in hardware (ie. the videocards settings).

Thanks, will do. The only option I have re refresh rate is 25i. I found a setting called "AI" on the TV. Turning it off softens the edges and makes this less noticable. The TV also has a 100Hz mode - the options options are Auto and Progressive, which make it flicker alot. Is there (likely to be) a way of focing a higher refresh rate - am I on the right track?
