A router doesn't give you DNS needed to resolve \\SMURFPC you depend on the Windows Master Browser to do this and it is not 100% reliable.

I had a problem where the NPVR client could only partly see the server even though the firewall was correctly setup. I could view the TV listings but trying to do anything else either failed or gave an error. After investigation I found that the problem was caused by my Linksys router as everything worked if the client/server were connected directly using another DHCP switch. A factory reset of the router did not cure the problem but using static addresses for the client and server did.

The LinkSys routers are a bit weird, at my site it would not allow full access unless I gave it the mac-address to all computers involved.

Seems like a bit of a pattern! My router is a linksys as per sig with tomato firmware.
I seem to have had symptoms like jcjefferies until I used mac address based static dhcp too.

I don't buy it, I'd bet you could set static IP on the PC's themselves and get similar results, unless something else is broken ie you are creating multiple subnets without knowing it.
