I don't think that the local power settings would affect network drives where the drive's server has "disconnected" the drive to save on its resources.

Also, I've seen reports of some drives (especially "green" ones) where the drive's firmware will actually spin down the drive after a period of inactivity regardless of the host operating system power settings.

It did seem noticeably faster today. I started npvr, went to tv guide, then recordings (whats new) then ready, and then whats new again.

Nowhere near the 10 seconds probably seen in that first log
Sorry, another patch with a couple more log messages in key places.

As the other guys mention, the occasional long access time might be related to Window's reconnecting a share.

I've seen similar, significantly noticeable delays with the various Recordings screens coming up (either coming off the screen saver or after playback of a show ends) at times. I'm pretty sure that when it happens to me, it is because one of the drives used for recordings has been spun-down to save power/wear-and-tear, and the delay is while the drive is spinning back up so that NPVR can read something from it. All of my drives are local, but I'm guessing I'd see similar delays if some of the drives were network drives that had to reconnect. This "delay" is kind of annoying, but we just learned to live with it...

If you want to test, you write a little batch job to just touch each drive you've got files on (do a directory or something), pause a minute, then repeat. Run that in the background on your server for a period and see if it makes any difference.

Ok yeah I'll look at that. Being a new install i haven gone and turned off all of that stuff that I would have had in my xp system. And do anwhile I had hibernation going, but found it did work well for me. So it's entirely possible that the drive has spun down.

But I also notice that it continues to be slow - where if it was the drive I'd expect it to respond quickly after the initial delay.

So just to revisit this. I think it was of my own causing, given that about 185 of my "recordings" were on another machine.

That said, Ive been using downloaded content in the recording plugin for over a year now with npvr and it never was a slow. I suspect it's something to do with either checking the existence of recordings on generating the list, or getting the playback position, hmm now I think about it, it shouldn't be the 2nd as that's a DB operation.....so it must be the checking recordings exist.

I wonder if there could be (should be) a way of turning this checking off, and only checking recordings when entering them (for delete, playback etc).

So at the the moment I've deleted all external recordings, and will probably use the videos plugin, but with this mode of operation I lose that I've played something.

Look in the config.xml file for:
Code:
<AutoRemoveMissingRecordings>true</AutoRemoveMissingRecordings>
    <CheckForRenamedRecordings>true</CheckForRenamedRecordings>
    <NoRemoveWhenTreeMissing>true</NoRemoveWhenTreeMissing>

I'm not sure, but if you change AutoRemoveMissingRecordings to false, then the setting of NoRemoveWhenTreeMissing probably wouldn't matter.

I'm still waiting for the logs from that patch posted above (#12) to help me work out exactly what is taking the time.

Hi

Loooks like i hadn't done that update. I reimported everything back in after loading the patch and toodled around the recording plugin....the times didn't seem to bad. I might give it 30 mins or so and repeat.

We also found stopping, or letting a recording end and the return to the recording screen very slow (even if it was a local recording).

So this log has me in the recordings plugin flicking between what's new and ready recordings.

Then play a recording, skipping mostly to the end and stopping it. The times were not too bad, so I'll try the same activity later on.

Can you see if this helps? If not, post the npvr.log again. (switching back forth again)

Did seem a bit faster, but it's via a vnc connection, which I had to do something, then move the mouse to get the screen to update, so its a bit deceiving.

I assume (looking at the logs) you removed the check onthe playback position?
