Doesn't even need to be your real autograph, we all enjoy the newbs wondering what your real name is (though it doesn't seem to happen as much any more - back when I joined it seemed to be a recurring topic). Just burn a CD with the current NPVR installer and the license text, then handwrite something on the front like "NPVR 2.x.x - Cheers, Sub". Unless of course selling a CD with NPVR on it confuses legal matters when the software is actually free for personal use.

I'm totally with Mr Johnson here along these principles, and the sticker idea that was toted before. BUT anything like this is more work for sub, surely. Great in principle but if it means putting something in the post?

Surely it has to be something that can be downloaded? This to me would be the only way?

cheers

It doesn't necessarily have to do anything to the software, but those that "donate" can enter a key and turn their copy of NPVR into a properly licensed copy. Without the key it just stays in an indefinite "evaluation" mode. Then it wouldn't have to be anything other than an extra bit in the Settings dialog - perhaps in its "About" screen, that could show that this copy of NextPVR is licensed to <insert name here>...

FWIW I also like Iain's idea, but IMHO this would turn off many a potential and current GB-PVR user (looking to move to NextPVR?), and NextPVR user as I can imagine the posts about 'sub is ramping up to start charging for his software? And this is just the 1st step?'

The problem with a CD or stickers is the international postage costs, and the time/effort required.

It maybe just be a license that simply enables some 'thanks for being a contributer' text in the settings screen or something similar.

If NextPVR becomes licensed software (not "freeware"), you would lose Schedules Direct as an option. I suggest premium accounts on the web site.

yep, what Iain said.

I think all you have to do is sell a license, then have the user enter the registration code and have it say "registered copy" in settings menu.
tbh I doubt paypal give a rats arse about that level of detail once you have confirmed that you are selling a s/ware license.

Could you carry the "stickers" idea over. Rather than being a "senior member" or wotnot, you could become a registered/premium senior member or something. I know over on avforums they seem to have endless member types (although mainly based on post count). Just think of the fun you could have coming up with titles...

Martin, how would premium accounts work? What would a premium account get?

Does it have to provide something extra? It is something that could be recorded with PayPal and still keep the "freeware" designation required by SD.
