After 10 days of problem-free recording, I got the first bad recording yesterday. The file is there and about 5.8GB which seems about right for 1 hour of HD. But, it just shows a black screen in NPVR, and chokes VLC. Martin, do you want a chunk of the file to look at?

After finding the bad recording, I tried live TV and it worked fine. The same program recorded fine 3 hours later (thank you repetitious cable).

Sure I'd wouldn't mind a 50MB sample on dropbox or megaupload to check if it is a valid ts file. Are you using the NPVR TS writer?

OK, I'll get a sample to you as soon as I find cutchunk, etc. A day or so. I do use the NPVR TS writer. I also have the Nvidia TS parser between the tuner and writer in the graph. This is a leftover from my previous experiments with Graphcorder, so I just left it. Didn't seem to affect anything negatively, until now perhaps. Smile

50MB sample on the way. Timing info attached, if that's of any use.

Your file plays fine with NPVR and the NMT, which is usually my first test but it does fail in NPVR. If I fire up MPC-HD which is a much much better test than VLC and I see your prepadding and recording is working just fine. Looking at the file itself there is junk in the beginning of the file and if I remove that even NPVR plays it. Maybe it took time for the cable box to become copy freely after a channel change?

This does look like a file you might want to give to sub. You are using the NPVR TS writer, and it might be able to be tweaked.

Thanks. I'll check with Sub. Junk at the beginning of the file is not new for me. Don't know if it's the STB (Moto DCT64xx?) or Charter. There were a couple of HD locals when I first got the box that could not be recorded. There were missing whatever it is that is repeated every 187 bytes, or whatever. Obviously pretty fuzzy on the details.

You also might want try using the NPVR TS Mon instead of the NVidia TS parser (if you need anything at all)

Edit and every 188 bytes you should see a G (0x47)

That's it: 0x47 every 188 bytes. I knew it was something like that. Smile I'll try the TS mon just for the heck of it. Only two more important cable shows to record, The Closer and Rizzoli and Isles. Then, it's back to broadcast.
