I finally bit the bullet & for a birthday pressie for the Boss purchased a secondhand 23" WS LCD to replace that stupid old 14" SD TV in the bedroom.

In the specs it is capable of 1080i but it only has scart, compisite & an svideo connections & a DVI connector. When stetting up the NMT the only selection under compisite is NTSC or PAL but when selecting PAL it then uses the index_sd.htm (as I would expect) & selects 800x600 as it's mode so all the menus & photos are squashed & stretched (when she saw a picture of herself the comment was "I am not a short or fat as that"), when I tried to force 720(50) the TV did display a message saying "Widescreen" (which was promising) but it didn't display the pvr menu. I am not sure what is the recommended way to setup this type of TV with the NMT? I was also wondering if I got a hdmi to dvi connector if firstly that would work & secondly as the Boss uses the TV sleep off function every night this will cause it problems using hdmi.

When I started I used a cheap HDMI to DVI connector and I could even get 1080p out of it. The risk here is I have never tested driving the analog audio out and HDMI simultaneously.

However note that doesn't sound like a TV that sounds like a computer monitor with a built in SD tuner. Another potential gotcha is the 1080i might be designed with a fixed rate of 60hz rather than 50hz.

Sorry you lost me, do you mean it wouldn't receive the sound through the hdmi connector??

here is a link to the web site for it

it is a TV with things like the sleep function etc. that you don't get on a computer monitor

I wasn't trying to get 1080i I was trying for 720 as personally I can't see any real difference between them on our 42" TV. If I do connect it up hdmi through the dvi connector will the putting the TV to sleep timer cause a problem??

You lost me know, weren't you saying it only had DVI? There is no audio in DVI input.

I will maintain that signage products are more monitor than TV.

I recommend 1080i/p for mvpmcx2, because the OSD looks much sharper. It's still HDMI, and the ability to recover from sleep will vary by HDMI/CEC implementation. The recommendation is exit to the NMT menu always when not using NPVR.

Yeah sorry I am way out of date when it comes to this type computer/TV stuff, it is DVI only so no sound

If worst come to worst I could do with a new computer monitor to replace this aged old 19" CRT <grin> & the price was right especially for a computer monitor

I was fairly sure that was the recommendation & that was why I was trying to get WS display working through the compisite ports as there is NO WAY (& I wouldn't expect her to) she isn't going to wake up just to put the NMT into standby before the TV turns itself off... Oh well you live & learn I guess & I nearly always buy the "wrong thing" which is bloody annoying when you don't have much money.

The analog sound might still work, I just never tested it

I will try hooking up HDMI on the 42" & hooking up some speakers direct to the analogue output on the NMT as soon as I get some time to see what it does before getting a HDMI->DVI adapter.
