Blanking out logos

As one example, Channel 4 HD in the UK show a lot of good films, in their original aspect ratio and with 5.1 sound, but then they go and ruin it all by stamping an ugly and distracting 4HD logo on the screen.

Seeing as it's often in the black area of the picture, I was wondering if it would be feasible to write a small plugin that could just paint a black rectangle over this area? I guess, a) is it possible?, b) would a permanent overlay affect other stuff like responding to the keyboard?, and c) would it have to repaint all the time, because that would kill the cpu surely?

Just thought I'd post for comments before I waste any time on it.

Zoom Player will do this using "image blanking".
It allows for setting true black on top/bottom and/or left right.
It does exactly what you want with no overhead.
It probably could be added to Npvr but how much hassle it would cause Sub to implement it I don't know.

If you use ffdshow it has an option called logoaway that does what you want as solid fill. Here is the original, solid fill and blur. Blur over video can be annoying too but for your specific example it would be ok with solid fill.

Now what about a plugin to remove Coronation Street? It seems to be on all the time.

Not really an option for me I'm afraid as it's never been any good with my HD content. I was hoping a simple plugin would work (for blanking, rather than blurring) then I could use it with any decoder.

That sample above was 1080i and I just tried on an h264 channel (Coronation Street is still showing) and logoaway works ok. You must mean it as ffdshow.

Sorry, I just meant that ffdshow has never performed that well for me with broadcast HD, unlike the Arcsoft decoder which works flawlessly.

Ok, you can do it (in NPVR), and it seems simple enough, although this is my first attempt at anything that draws over the main display so I might not be doing it in the best way.

More importantly though, when it's active, it completely blocks all input so you can't ever turn it off (or bring up the TV Guide, change channel, etc). I assume/hope there's a way I can get it to hand whatever input its captured back to NPVR itself?
