I updated my diskless ATOM-ION setup for xnpvrcli on XBMC 10.1. As a result I put a short guide on the wiki:

Thanks very much for this. The previous version worked very well on my O2 Joggler "device". I'll try the new one when I get a bit of time.

Hi, I have been trying to install this on several different PCs. The one I really want to install on is my ACE AspireRevo which has an ATOM and ION-LE. On that computer and 3 others including one that ran gbpvr with hidef dvr-ms shows recorded over ATSC, I am able to install xbmc 10.1, but as soon as I try to install mplayer I get a whole series of what it calls impossible dependencies.

When I first tried installing on a PC that only had GMA3150, I thought perhaps it might have not loaded some needed codecs. The dependencies include:

libaa1 >= 1.4p5 but it is not installable
libavcodec52 ...
libavcode-extra52 ...
libavformat52 ...

any several more. I get this same error on all 4 computers. Is there something else I need to do before trying to install mplayer?

Thanks,
Steve Tyrakowski

Have you tried:
Code:
sudo apt-get update
before installing mplayer? Mplayer should install with all the dependencies satisfied automatically.

That got me a lot farther. You should add that note in the instructions. Also a minor typo on the unzip libplayer2.zip instruction is missing the '2'.

I'm not sure if there are any other missing steps, because when you say to edit the .mplayer/config and the .lircrc files, I simply copied your example files because those files did not exist even though I did the install of mplayer. I don't know if I am supposed to do an install for lircrc or if that is something xbmc-live should have installed.

The remote does not seem to work in the xbmc menus after I turned it on in the settings, so I probably have to deal with finding the software for that.

Anyway, after I did startx and tried to run :
xnpvrcli 192.168.9.203 -t 4

I got this:
Code:
You did not specify a port to connect to. Assuming 5906.

Trying ports 5906 and 8337 on 192.168.9.203.
Connecting to VNC port: 192.168.9.203:5906

Trying ports 5909 and 8340 on 192.168.9.203.
Connecting to VNC port: 192.168.9.203:5909

Trying ports 5910 and 8341 on 192.168.9.203.
Connecting to VNC port: 192.168.9.203:5910
Connect Error
Couldnt establish connection with the NPVR server on VNC port. Exiting

The address is correct and it is running 4 servers. I can verify that the server works because I have an MVP that successfully displays the menu. (playing video is another story). Note that I am currently running UltraVNC server on that computer as well since it is in the basement and I am viewing it from my Mac mini upstairs. It looks like UltraVNC is using port 5900. It is also running the mvpmc dongle in case that might be a factor.

Also, I copied config to .mplayer/ folder. I don't know what the differences in config 2 and config 3 are.

Any other ideas
Thanks,

Thanks for the feedback. I will fix this on the wiki.

I should fix this to. The files are not there by default in a fresh install.

lircd is installed by default, but you may need to configure it.
Code:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure lirc
might be enough. I however had to configure the proper lircd input device by hand in my setup.

xnpvrcli lacks the automatic server discovery and port negotiation that MVP uses so, if the server-ip is 100% correct, it is most likely a port problem. Check config.xml for:
Code:
<StartPortControl>5906</StartPortControl>
<StartPortMedia>8337</StartPortMedia>

You should then manually specify both ports on the command line:
Code:
xnpvrcli <server-ip>:<StartPortControl> -m <StartPortMedia> -t <num-servers>

I do not understand to what config 2 and config 3 refer?

Looks like I have more work to figure that one out or get a better supported device.

That solved it, but I can't navigate with mouse, keyboard or remote. I think the remote may be causing a problem cuz the light stayed on after pressing a button while trying to test in xbmc.

That's my fault. I tried to open the .zip file several times and the mac just added numbers to the extra times instead of overwriting. I guess that explains why a quick glance didn't notice any differences between the files. I mistakenly thought you had a couple different examples in the zip file.

Thanks for all your help.

In my case with an MCE like usb remote I had to manually edit /etc/lirc/hardware.conf and set proper REMOTE_DEVICE by trial and error after checking what is available in /dev/input/by-path

Code:
# /etc/lirc/hardware.conf
#
#Chosen Remote Control
REMOTE="Linux input layer (/dev/input/eventX)"
REMOTE_MODULES="lirc_dev lirc_mceusb2"
REMOTE_DRIVER="devinput"
REMOTE_DEVICE="/dev/input/by-path/pci-0000:00:04.0-usb-0:2:1.1-event-ir"
REMOTE_LIRCD_CONF="devinput/lircd.conf.devinput"
REMOTE_LIRCD_ARGS=""

Mouse is not supported. It is strange that keyboard does not work.

Just a quick note if you are a Window user, use WINSCP to open and edit files it is much easier to use this tool to access any Linux files that has SSH enabled, you right click on the file then edit and it will open the file and when you close it if you made any changes it will copy the file back in the same location you opened it from.

To create a new file just open notepad on your windows box type in test save it and use WINSCP to copy it over to the location you need it in then edit the file, this is much easier than using VI or nano editor or any Linux/Unix edit tool.

Another must have is putty which is a great remote SSH cli tool to use and work as a standalone app or with WINSCP as you can set it up to open a putty session from the WINSCP menu, been using both for years since I remote into Linux systems everyday at my job.

Both can be downloaded from here http://winscp.net/eng/download.php
