I'd love NPVR to have support for this.

Quote:Consumer Electronics Control (CEC) is an HDMI feature designed to allow the user to command and control two or more CEC-enabled devices, that are connected through HDMI, by using only one of their remote controls (for example by controlling a television set, set-top box, and DVD player using only the remote control of the TV). CEC also allows for individual CEC-enabled devices to command and control each other without user intervention.

PC graphics cards don't support HDMI-CEC but there is an adaptor available that adds the capability.

What exactly would you want the hdmi-cec controls to do?

I turned it off on my Samsung TV to BR player as it was slow as anything switching to that input because of it.
NextPVR is a bit different from XBMC as it's a TV recorder as well, so turns itself on whenever it needs to.

You wouldn't want the TV switching inputs when the PC resumes from standby to record a show, but controlling with the TV remote does sound pretty cool

Just buy a Logitech Harmony.

My one remote controls TV, amp, xbox, PC (which does dvd, blu-ray, music, etc), LED lights...

My vision for NextPVR client extenders definitely includes CEC support. For whole home solutions a think separating the backend and client is important and integrating and easy to install client with the TV is a good thing. While blasters and similar interfaces interfaces provide some value they are not always that reliable, and they do require a level of skill that isn't necessarily available.

Unfortunately one has to be awake to use a remote. If I fall asleep watching a film I want my TV to go into standby when my HTPC does.

Good point.

Hopefully any system would be able to tell the difference between an HTPC being brought out of standby manually and it being brought out of standby for other reasons.

Seriously? CEC doesn't even work between brands. My Panasonic TV and Philips Bluray player both are supposed to support it, but differences in the way both manufacturers have implemented it means it doesn't work. I've seen this with friend's AV set ups too. I would be supprised to see it work from a software app and work with more than one or two models of gear. As imilne said, get a Logitech remote. It's a far more comprehensive solution.

Most modern TVs have a "go into standy after X minutes of no picture" (which will be the case if the htpc goes into standby Tongue

Edit: quick idea... You could try and check available IR related programs, and see if any of them has the ability to detect imminent standy/hibernate and (using an IR blaster) order your TV to also go into standy. This solution would imply that if might get your tv shut down because of a "wake-up-to-record-and-hibernate-afterwards" cycle. Or... it could turn _ON_ your tv (if it was off). Food for though anyway...

Does that mean every device in your setup has to be CEC compatible though? What about the situation where you *are* awake, but happen to be gaming on the TV using another of its inputs with the HTPC recording away in the background. You don't want the TV turning off when the HTPC has finished recording if you're still in the middle of Call of Battlefield 5.
