Two days ago I was in a hurry to record Mary Tyler Moore. The epg failed to load, so I went and set the thing to do it manually.
NPVR started to record the show. Then it suddenenly failed after a partial recording. Now I cannot access via the webserver the recordings. If I try, the thing just sends an error. Tonight I went into NPVR directly without the webserver. Programmed it to record the same show as recurring. That seemed to work. Result? The computer sat there at 7PM and wasnt doing anything. Do I have to delete and reinstall NPVR yet again?
I would guess the problem is that this software is Java. Java always fails. Its slow as frozen snot. It crashes every 2 seconds. Why do people bother with Java?
The only thing written in Java that ive ever seen that works is Firefox.
That is also slow, but at least it more or less, works.
Firefox only crashes once in awile. That is better than all the time, for no reason.
It isnt my computer. Ive switched off from one computer to another newer one for years. Java is always a problem. It never, ever, works in a reliable fashion and is always slow. There is a new invention... its called 'C'. Fast as hell and doesnt crash for no reason.
Sorry, but I have missed so many programs on TV using this software, that Im about ready to say screw HDTV dolby 5.1 and go back to plain old fashioned video tape.
At least when I program that to record, it records. No if ands or buts. Crappy video quality as it is.
It really shouldnt be uber rocket science to command a card to start recording. I will stop complaining now. Then uninstall, delete the entire folder to NPVR. Then reinstall hoping that will fix the thing.

Actually it's not even written in Java and it doesn't really do anything to your PC that uninstalling/reinstall would fix.

As for asking for help, here is the best way to get it http://www.nextpvr.com/nwiki/pmwiki.php?n=FAQ.FAQ#toc1 Logs are the key.

yes, please post some logs; just uninstalling and re-installing isn't going to change anything. The problems you're describing don't happen to anyone else, so it's likely a problem with your computer which we can hopefully help with, or if it is an NPVR bug you've encountered then logs and reproducable steps are the only way to get it fixed.

edit: also, why would you think this program uses Java? The pre-req's are Microsoft Visual C Runtime and .NET Runtime. Not Java.

(I must admit my initial reaction was pretty much the same as stustunz's deleted post!)

Sir, there is something very wrong with your computer.
Hopefully you'll have the patience to let us help you sort this out.
btw: the log files are located in users\npvr\logs

Martin

Further, Firefox isn't written in Java either.

besides, all the programs I have that are written in Java work just fine. whenever someone describes horrific computer problems that no one else has, and then claims "it isn't my computer", then it's always their computer.... which ultimately comes down to a PEBKAC issue.

Although I understand your frustration, your little rant was totally out of order, and quite frankly (no abuse intented) plainly ignorant and misguided... NPVR was not writing in Java... NPVR is stable. For it to crash without recovering by itself, your setup probably got corrupted somewhere down the line. Also, funny thing you mention that brand "new invention" C, since the pre-requisites mention Visual C Runtime. <sarcasm>Hurray for sub being so "in with the new"</sarcasm>

If I myself ever needed proof of sub's excelent job at creating a stable dvr solution FOR FREE for all of us to use and abuse, I got that a while ago; I realised the last time I had done a better-safe-than-sorry reboot had been about a month before. In the mean time, it had gone smoothly trough the motions. Going into standy, waking up to record, updating epg, and again standby. I have a 30/40 shows-per-week schedule. Sometimes maxed out (for my setup) at 6 simultaneous recordings. For it to run smoothly like that, for that long, using the same windows 7 login session, while we viewed recordings, DVDs, edited commercial breaks, etc, is no mean feat...

From your own words... "The epg failed to load" <- did you even tried to figure out why it failed? If _my_ epg update failed, my first course of action would be checking the epg grabbing procedure, to see if it was indeed running without errors.
Could be many things. If you're using a xmltv based file as epgsource, maybe your source is not scrapping correctly.
Have you checked your Settings window (mouse right button), under the devices section? Is your device "Present" parameter value "Yes"? If it's not, NPVR simply doesn't have available tuners to record.

But like others have said in their replies, something is amiss you system. Reproduce a crash, a failed attempt to record something. NextPVR being a one-programmer-job when it comes to its core, may have some ocasional quirks. But sub, and the rest of the community, are always available to help iron them out. Suggestions on how to improve it, from a end-user pointofview, are always welcome. Bitching is not.

Oh... BTW, programs don't crash like hell because of the programming language chosen. They crash because of EBCAK. Sometimes it's the user... Sometimes the programmer...

My NPVR setup doesn't crash...

I'm done ranting...

Was this a flying visit from a troll?
Does anyone in the US record Mary Tyler Moore? Last time it was on in the UK was about 30 years ago!
It's not an overly complicated system - it's more - overly simple operatives  Huh
